It is Friday – It is Headingly – It is raining - weather forecast is not good for a result – England one up in a two match series (more of a visit than a series – should be at least 3 matches – they need to sort that out)
A wicked win by England in the first test – on the back of very good performances by Root, Cook the England bowlers as whole and a brilliant match performance by Stokes. England were lucky tho – McCullum’s great attribute is his attacking mentality – In the first inning when first Root and then Stokes arrived he over attacked allowing the momentum to swing towards the batsmen, Root played beautifully and Stokes rode his luck which backed up by contributions by Buttler and Moeen dug England out of the hole and gave them belief – New Zealand batted very well in their first innings in the face of some very good England bowling to get the lead and had England by the throat again at the start of their second innings - however the arrival of Root (again) and anchored by Cook followed by another brilliant performance by Stokes took the game away from the Kiwis – A brilliant start by the England bowlers took away the possibility of a Kiwi win – and just as the draw was becoming more likely Stokes produced a brilliant spell removing Williamson and McCullum – Cook did well to introduce the spin of first Root and then Moeen at the right time and England were then able to winkle out the tail for the win.
There is ability in the side – but can they repeat the feat – To my mind the top 4 including Cook have got to show they can do the business – too much pressure being put on the likes of Root, Stokes, Buttler and Moeen – and England bowl better when they have a few runs behind them – Cook has got to get back to consistently making the big runs that practically single headedly carried England through their most successful times - Stokes played brilliantly but no way has he done enough to be described as the new Botham or Freddie – Botham was the alpha male cricketer – just the sight of him was enough to provoke batsmen into rash shots and bowlers to go off the rails - Flintoff was able to consistently produce spells where he worked over batsmen for match winning performances.
All to do again – The Kiwis will have shrugged off their jet lag and be more in a Test Match frame of mind for the second Test - England have got to compete otherwise going into the main event against the Aussies they will have little chance.
