Kiwis – 297 for 8 at close

Yesterday morning I think England would have been happy to have kept New Zealand to around 300 for the loss of 8 in three sessions – but this was from 65overs

England bowlers started well with Anderson getting 2 for almost nothing – the Kiwis tho came back in the “aggressive style” that they have adopted – Latham a positive 84, McCullum a feisty 41 and Ronchi a hard hitting 88 - however, the England bowling was at best described as variable – the bowlers seemingly unable to a bowl a consistent line and length - (I find it difficult to believe that they have got to international level without being able to deliver to a line and length) - add in a flurry of dropped catches when the ball was actually put in the right place it was not pretty - Late wickets have put England on top and hopefully conditions early on this morning will be helpful to England in disposing of the tail.

England’s top order this morning have got to do the business - not just to put England in a good position in this test but to give themselves a confidence boost for when the Aussies arrive.

England – England 253 for 5 – Trail by 97

England failed to deal with Kiwi tail – more inconsistent bowling – too much short bowling – and good batting by the Kiwis – allowing them to put on another 53 runs in 7 overs – turning what was an average sort of score into a decent’ish first innings

England came out and played well – some might say a bit pedestrian – slower than the kiwis but the Kiwis had only once ever scored that many runs as quickly - the Kiwis bowled better than England – tighter line, length and fewer 4 balls – and their spinner did the business (1 for 38 in 22 overs) – Cook passed the grand total of Gooch without much fuss before being out for 75 – Lyth got his maiden test century – then it all started going wrong for England with Balance, Root and Stokes getting out late on to a very good new ball spell by the Kiwis in helpful conditions.

Bell today has to earn his corn – Buttler has to show that he can bat in this form of the game – Moeen has to come to the party

Mr G and I are furious - were out all day, sat down to watch the Ch 5 highlights which we had recorded on DVD and for some reason the recording didn't work. MASSIVE GRUMP. Would have loved to see Cook get his record and Lyth do his stuff, there's something very special about a maiden century. Sorry Stokes messed it up, I have a suspicion he might be a bit of an up-and-downer in his career due to temperament, I really hope not as he was inspirational at Lord's.

Looks like play is going to be patchy today with all the rain though.
