Well we have now had the options talk and I was surprised how open the school was about the English Baccalaureate - basically they said it was a measure of a school not a pupil so they weren't changing the options to make it compulsory to study those subjects. The only proviso they gave was they didn't know if in future universities might look for it when choosing students for an over subscribed course. They did imply that some neighbouring schools might be reconsidering what options they offered though.

I think that there are tensions amongst the senior management within some schools. Some managers see it as yet another set of standards by which schools can be placed in rank order others see it as an imposition upon the kids and as identified by your school, it might not be appropriate for all kids. If anything the tensions over the Baccalaureate will take a back seat when the national curriculum review gets underway.

To second guess universities recruitment procedures is also pointless - with their current funding drop students will be lucky to have a choice of university never mind a choice of university course
