Passed a board outside a pub earlier touting 'pan-fried bream'. I've always found that a baffling expression. As opposed to what other kind of fried bream? Bream fried without a pan?

Ah. Well at least that makes sense. (Even if deep-frying is generally done in a pan.) Thanks. I'm unbaffled!
 
"Cleave" can mean to either split/break apart or to hold/put together. It is only in the context of the sentence that you work out which meaning is being used.

It does seem odd when we can have lots of words for the same thing but then other things have to share a word.
