hello still looking into converting my sirrus elite to drop bars,after studying various sites including this one,i have finally discovered it is possible,sti shifters will apparently work with mini vee brakes,i have discovered a site that sells brake noodles with built in barrel adjusters which was another worry of mine,i can add in line adjusters to the gear cables so now the problem is i have just discovered 2011 ergopower shifters for sale on a site half the price of the 2009 shimano tiagras,with the added advantage of the cables exiting from the back of the hoods,which will give a much better looking finish,so my question is would this be compatable with a shimano deore chainset and also has anyone used these with mini vee brakes and lastly judging by the price there must be a big difference in quality or am i just paying for the shimano name,any advice would be appreciated thankyou.

If I were you I would hold your horses for the time being.

A major problem is depending on what speed you have Shimano and Campag rear drivetrains are generally not compatible, although there are a few exceptions.

Although it is not indexed, I am also unsure if the road front shifter will always pull enough cable across for a deore (mountain, presumably triple?) chainset to avoid rubbing.

You will need to provide a much fuller list of what you have.

i have shimano deore lx 9 speed chainset and deore lx triple crankset,if this combination is not possible do you know if shimano will be bringing out lower priced shiters for 2011 with the cables coming out of the back like the ultegra 6700,

I have no idea what the 2011 Shimano shifters do with regard to cable arrangement, you might want to ask someone knowledgeable at a road orientated shop such as Ribble.

Just thinking aloud and hopefully haven't missed anything:
A Campag 9 speed ergo shifter will not index properly with your existing Shimano rear mech and 9 speed cassette.

A Campag 11 speed ergo shifter should index reasonably well with your existing rear mech and cassette if properly adjusted. This option is probably moot since such shifters are no less inexpensive than Shimano's.

However a Campag 10 speed ergo shifter should index very well with your existing rear mech if you swap the cassette for an 8 speed one (although changing the way the cable is supposed to be clamped on the rear mech may allow the existing cassette to work also).

As long as your front mech is a mtb model, an ergo left hand front shifter should also allow shifting across your triple lx chainset reasonably well (but note you have to ensure the model is not indexed). I would not recommend mixing any Shimano drop bar road shifter with their mtb front mech if you are using a triple.

Use of a Shimano MTB front mech with ergo's restricts the overall throw of the mech, which is a potential cause for chain rub and sluggish gear changes.

What about 10 speed ergos with the 9 speed Shimano? You'll have to Hubbub the clamp cable position or similar.

A key reason is that to mitigate the difference in mechanical advantage between road and mtb levers not only are the mini-Vs' arms shorter but the brake pads have to be set pretty close to the rim, which has implications for wobbly rims, tyre size and wheel release.

I think this comment only applies to sti's, not ergos. I have measured it myself and agree with various comments on the web that the amount of cable pulled by a Campag front shifter is practically the same as that of a Shimano mtb shifter. But as I mentioned earlier for a triple one should not use the Escape models e.g. because they can't microshift.

I think this comment only applies to sti's, not ergos.

My comment on Shimano MTB front mechs and ergo's is based on experience. If not optimally set up (Deore chainset for this) then the reduced swing of the mech operated by the Ergo shifter does result in more chain rub and the very real chance that the mech won't shift the chain as desired.

You could always trade the mini-Vs in for some cyclo-cross cantis.... they work really well with the ergos on mine.
I'm using 2010 Veloce shifters with 105 triple front & ultegra rear - 9 speed cassette with Hubbub. Beware though - because some of the lower end 2011 Ergos have "powershift" rather than "ultrashift" so the ratchet may be different and you may not be able to trim the mech correctly on the middle ring.
