Mrs A and I went to this today and had a ball. The real event is on Sunday, but there are lots of stalls and excellent opportunities to talk bike all day. It is on the Bakewell Showground.

The theme is retro, but there are all sorts there. It costs £5 to get in, which is probably OK, but it was free last year. We will be back on Sunday to see the riders coming in.

Didn't have a lot to say about this last night, but having had a tiring day out, I'll add some detail. now.

Last year we went on the Sunday, a bit cynical I will admit, as this event is clearly building on/ cashing in on the Italian version. The rides are pretty expensive for participants and the value might be questionable. The promotion, on the other hand, is superbly professional, which might or might not be cause for further suspicion. Face it, us cyclists are a bit reluctant to part with the cash, even us Bianchi riders who have been accused of being ex-golfers! (I would like to make it clear I have never golfed in my life, and would not wish to be a member of any golf club that would have me!)
Anyway, back to the event. What we liked most about last year was the sense of fun and occasion that was there. Each of the returning riders was hailed by name and cheered with details of bikes etc being given out over the PA. Lots of fancy dress. It was a great couple of hours' bike-based entertainment. There were also many stalls and plenty of craft and food outlets, plus a bike jumble. We meant to enter this year and ride, but various health and fitness problems prevented this.
We had chosen to go up on the Friday as this was the opening day and also the launch of the new-look Bianchi Owners Club which we wanted to be at. Bianchi, incidentally, are the only big bike manufacturer represented, but Pashley and Mercian are there, so well done to them. Bianchi have created a new high-spec retro steel bike for the Eroica (both versions, I guess) and this attracted a lot of admiration. The new Specialissima CV was also present, which weighs about as much as a bag of crisps.
There are plenty of retail opportunities for both new and used clothing. Such was the scale of bargain that I was obliged to make a couple of trips back to our out-of-town parking place with a musette stuffed with bargains on my bike. Mrs A got some Northwave shoes (tiny) for £20 for example. I got some Nalini winter tights for £40.
There appears to be plenty of parking on the showground car-park, but we arrived just as many of the riders were showing up and the town was clogged, which is why we decided to ride in. You feel undressed without a bike anyway, preferably an older one. If you fancy a day out on Sunday, which is the main day, you could do a lot worse for a fiver, but I suspect most of the bargains will be long gone by then.

We went just for Saturday. Brilliant day out. Not really my thing, the retro stuff but a fantastic day out and loads to see and do. Bought a Brooks top, wool of course. Nice it is too. Will go next year and might even get a weekend ticket and camp, even though we live in Hadfield! Lots of dogs there too which was nice to see and the town itself is lovely too. Brilliant day. Gez

I was there from Friday night until just before lunch on Monday. To be honest I didn't think it was overpriced and the ride was amazing if hard and fairly white knuckle at times. The food stops where more like full blown picnics with ale to drink if you liked, yes I liked on more occasions that I probably should have.

The people were also lovely as is Bakewell and the surrounding area and I will be back next year fitter and with better gearing as 42/21 is not small enough to get over the top of a lot of it.

We went on Sunday - although in our house its been named everything from Erotica to Ebola.
Watched the riders come in, while lazing the day away on deck chairs - did you see the guy come in on the Penny Farthing ? Ultimate respect. I have a sneaky feeling he probably did the 100 mile route too.
Thought it was a fab day out, and at a fiver, really good value .

Yeah well worth a fiver to be fair. Great range of foods on offer and the Thornbridge beer was quite nice too! Will do the weekend next year but probably not the Friday so will decide whether to trip down both days or stay over somewhere. We are only about an hour away but were knackered after Saturday this year and might not be able to talk herself into driving down both days and back. Loved it. Dog loved it too which is a bonus! The penny farthing did the 35 mile ride but I still take my hat off to him.

We went back on Sunday as we had enjoyed Friday so much. Once again, the PA announcer did a superb job and kept the fun going. There were some wonderful sights as people followed the retro theme in land army gear, or as Dad's Army, or old-time coppers. I would guess that there were well over 10.000 cyclists there and locals were still queuing to get in at 4 on the Sunday. This really is an event not to be missed. Go on the Friday for bargains, go on the Sunday for the riders. Better still, book yourself on to a ride, but I think you will have to be quick.

Will have to see how my friend did, she went back with a solo this year having DNF'd the tandem ride last year on a Mixte framed Peugeot because it flexed so much it was skipping chains constantly and eventually ate most of the spokes in the back wheel.

No doubt at all that this is a tough ride. The parcours is a mix of hilly roads and trails, many of which are old railway lines which criss-cross this region. The 100 mile version starts at 6 and 11 hours later a fit young friend of ours staggered back having got through 4 tubs, a couple of spokes and a front-derailleur remount. One or two ended up carrying their bikes through the line. Your pre-1987 machine - as required by the rules - needs to be in good nick!

Yes, I think they got 35 miles in to the 100 last year and had already come off in one ford by then. I'm not sure if she was going for the 100 solo this year, but she'd put a lot of miles in in preparation (and was preferring her pre '87 solo to her current model Scott!)

My tubs got wonky as the tub tape melted as there are some crazy descents which are fun until you need to slow. Both ended up like this and I spent the last 10 plus miles riding with what felt like a flat spot on my rims. Great fun.
