What do you consider to be essential kit for commuting?

apart from my bike! I always have waterproofs, over summer I'll leave spare set in office rather than carry them always Usually carry spare tube and repair kit. Other essential - lock for bike

What do you consider to be essential kit for commuting?

depends on the distance - my commute is 15 miles one way.

On the bike:
- waterproof top
- pump, tyre levers, 2 spare tubes
- waterproof overshoes
- lights
- gloves
- hi viz
- mp3 player
- pants, socks and t-shirt
- food

At work:
- shower facilities
- leave shoes, trousers, washbag, towel at the office
- I wear casual clothes in the office but I also keep a suit, shirt and tie in the office in case I have a meeting to attend or a media appearance etc.

I Carry:
Waterproof trousers
Hi-Vis Jacket
Laptop (essential for work) Wallet, phone, keys etc

At Work :
Spare Innertube, and repair kit
Various tools I would need for tweaking or repairing a p******e
A spare handlebar (I dont know why i've kept it)
Oil

Optional :
Lights if I'm going to be arriving or leaving when its dark (or near dark) or if I think the weather may cause poor visibility.

Pretty much anything else I would need is at home.

This works well for me, as work and home are only 4 miles apart. I can live with an occasional failure because Its not too far to walk. Although, try to make sure that doesnt happen

Spare tube, CO2 inflator and a couple of tyre leavers, then again I have only used then once in 15 years of commuting...

Everything including the kitchen sink.......or just abouts.

My kit- either on me, or in the office has helped repair a few colleagues bikes....

My commute is only short so I don't really carry a great deal, just a mobile really as if anything goes wrong I'll be able to ring home/ office, I also consider it a form of ID, if I'm in an accident and laying unconscious then someone will be able to ring home and get my details. Although I guess the phone could get broken in the fall.

What safety precautions do you take? I had a crash recently and wish I had a pen and paper on me...

If the mobile breaks the police can use the simcard to contact relatives I think.

Personally I carry:

Mobile (with built in camera and voice recorder)
pen and paper
pump, tools and repairkit
Lights (winter 3 front and 3 back, summer 1 back and 2 front)
Money
Chain lock
Keys

Then theres me work gear in Exped dry bags, work ID and all that crammed into a 7L Altura rack bag.

multi-tool
pump(sometimes if i remember to put it in my bag)
spanner(for the back wheel)
drink(not that i really bother with it)
tyre levers(one thats kept in my bag all the time)

Thats about it.
Oh, there was a chain tool and screw driver in my bag aswell today because i forgot to take them out.
I travel light. My work is only just over 2 miles away, and i could get on a bus home if i needed, or to one of the bike shops in town.
Oh, and i dont need a lock because my bike is kept in the cellar so no real risk of it being stolen.
