Anyone commute from the Hornchurch/Romford area of Essex?

I currently do bike /train/bike but would like to see if I could cycle all the way but have no idea what the best route would be.

I seem to remember from a different thread that Mr Cellophane lives not too far from me but not sure whether they commute.

Anybody out there who can help??

Where exactly in London?

I mean whether you'd use the A11 or possibly the A10 to get in?

I live in Upminster, but only commute at weekends - 25 minutes on the train compared to 1:50 by bike ;) and then St Mary's Lane hill at the end. No contest really.
A colleague goes from near Hornchurch Sainsbury's every day. I have followed his route and tried a few of my own.
Try this first.
Roneo Corner (down hill )
Rush Green Road - don't go on the cycle path it is shared and too narrow and bumpy.
Wood Lane
Porters Avenue
Lodge lane
A13 - south side has an excellent CP
Canning Town - can be confusing as the CP signs are not very clear.
After that it depends where you want to go.
If you go East India Dock Road, mind the lights by the Blackwall Tunnel. The bus lane goes straight ahead, next lane turns left accross it into the tunnel and the far right is ahead for cars. The bus lane lights need a bus before they will change so don't sit there for 10 minutes like I did one day.
It is 19.4 miles from my house to Liverpool Street that way.
If you are nearer Romford/Collier Row, then that is not quite the way to go.

I do from time to time go from City to Benfleet, Essex which can go via Hornchurch/Romford. The most direct route for me is A13 (and old A13 from Dagenham/Rainham) until the outer parts of Upminster (scary bit is the North Circular intersection) and then country lanes across to Bulphan, Basildon then Benfleet.

Last time I did Mile End Road, Ilford, Barking, Hornchurch, Upminster, then on to Benfleet via the above country lanes again.

I suspect the quickest route to Upminster is A13 (being careful at North Circular intersection) and then left at the Rainham roundabout. But this won't be a nice commute particularly. Lots of cycle lanes and fast cars. Plus not the best route if you're ultimately heading for Romford.

The Mile End route I use is nicer but very stop/ start.

As Mr cellophane has intimated (and he probably knows best), the best route is probably a combination of roads between the A12/A127 & A13 in some fashion. I would try his suggested route and adapt accordingly.

thanks for all the replies.

For anyone who knows the area I live near to the cardrome/skatepark so I could go down to Roneo/Rush Green[Mr Cellophane I know what you mean about that shared cycle path totally useless] or up a bit cut through dagenham to A13 . Has A13 got good CP there and back and do you go around canning town flyover?

MR C I originally come from Upminster - Severn drive

I come in from Chadwell Heath to Mayfair where i work.

I tend to go down through Ilford and follow it all the way down Romford road through East ham, Stratford, Bow and whitechapel. Not sure if this is the quickest way to go as i have only been doing it for about two weeks.

I am riding a Specailized Sirrus Comp and can do the trip which is about 15 miles in about 55 mins to 1:10 mins.

The A13 CP is excellent, nice and smooth so even I can get up a good speed. Keep to the south side, it is much easier then the north. I tried the north once and got to the North Circ and had a choice of footbridge to cross to the south or head north and go through Barking.
Canning Town is a muddle. Can't say much more than that, there are about 3 options either side and I still haven't worked out which is best (apart from NOT going over the main flyover)

7 Drive - next road to me.
