Ive got an etrex H. after being very busy over the last 2 months ive not had a chance to get it up and running. Well i have tonight. but Im unable to upload routes to it. I have a lead going to a serial convertor. my laptop shows its plugged in in the devices section. but when I try and upload from easygps it says i need to instal garmin driver, which i have also done, but it still wont work. any ideas?

Make sure that your comms lead is plugged in to a USB port.

Have you done 'Add GPS'? (Edit Menu/Preferences/My GPS receivers/Add GPS...)

Select Garmin from the Manufacturers list, and Etrex H [Serial port] from the models.

Click OK and you should get a popup box with speed set to 9600 Baud. If you click on the 'Connect via' box you should see an option for your USB-Serial lead - in my case, I see 'COM4 USB-SERIAL CH340'.

Yeah I've done that but it don't seem to work. I will try again this evening.

Try another lead? Garmins can be a bit funny about the lead - my 800 stopped working with one lead that worked find the day before.

The complication is that the Etrex-H normally plugs into an old-fashioned RS232 serial port but nickg is using an RS232-USB converter, which is what I do with my Etrex.

Simple question - you do have the Garmin turned on while you are trying to transfer?

Yup turned on. I didn't get a chance to play last night. But to be honest I'm thinking about selling it and getting a basic computer.
