I read this years ago, have done it loads times and it works.
Flies are very good at spotting things approaching them at high speed. However, they don't see things moving slowly nearly so well. If you move your swatter towards them slowly they will just sit there and get squished!
Also, watch their front legs. If they are moving they are not watching you. If you see their legs stop then hold still 'till they start moving again.
Third point. If you move two swatters towards them, one each side, it confuses them. They don't know which way to go and stay put. This technique doesn't work as well as the first one.
The first time I used the 'slow' trick I had a horrible experience. There was a big Bluebottle on my bedroom window, hateful things. I got a metal thimble and put it on my finger. Slowly I moved my finger towards the fly and to my surprise it just sat there. So much so that I ended up pinning the Bluebottle to the glass with my thimbled finger.
I slowly crushed it and it made the most horrible cracking sound! I wasn't expecting that and it made my bones shiver :0( To this day it makes me wince to think about it, yeuuck.
