Get into an ethical discussion with them regarding uPVC Vs Wood, or green electricity Vs cheapest quote. Always good for a discussion.

Most who have visited me appear to have passed the intelligence test. Someone who has just had their window frames re-varnished is unlikely to want to buy some new windows, and all who do bother to knock seem to accept that I'm not going to be a customer.

OP: Don't bother to get some company to fit them - they'll be vastly over-priced for what they are!

There are loads of uPVC companies on the net - measure your own aperture, order and fit the doors yourself. Fitting read-made doors like that is pretty straightforward - a 2 hour job at most.

When I was looking for a conservatory, the sales rep from Anglian was very professional indeed. There were no silly games or high pressure sales tactics. We agreed the spec and he gave me the price with no pressure to agree 'there and then'. We saw may other sales reps from other companies who were much less professional, but in the end we decided the Anglian product was the best. Some of the local companies quoted cheaper, but these were for inferior products. Where they were subsequently able to increase the specs on their products to match Anglian's product, they ended up being more expensive.

Anyway, we decided to go with Anglian and it was all down-hill from then onwards. The entire project was an absolute fiasco from start to finish; you just would not believe the incompetence of the sub-contractors who built the conservatory and the total lack of management on the part of Anglian. You also would not believe the lies we were told by a finance rep from Anglian who tried to pressurise us into taking out their finance agreement even though we had told them we wanted to pay cash - that finance rep was the one and only person I have ever escorted off my property with strict instructions never to return.

This fiasco went on for over a year, but luckily I kept an accurate log from day 1 (with photos) which I built into an internet website on a server I had access to at the time. Eventually when the conservatory was completed to my satisfaction I refused to pay the final £10k due to breach of contract on the part of Anglian. I also then provided Anglian head-office with links to my detailed website log which made very interesting reading indeed. Eventually we reached agreement on final terms and I ended up getting £6k knocked off the agreed price of £20k, so I ended up with a very high spec conservatory £14k. Reading this you may think we were lucky to get £6k knocked off, but believe me it did not compensate for all the stress and Anglian only agreed because I had them by the short and curlies with my website log (luck or generosity on the part of Anglian did not come into the equation one bit).

Shaun - I can sympathise with you on this one!

I had my windows and front door fitted by Bowater Zenith. They told me all sorts of lies - e.g. that the front door would be internally beaded because it was safer - and when they'd fitted it I noticed that it was externally beaded, etc, etc!

Also, my Mother then had months of misery with Anglian who extended her porch and gave her a new front door - which is now so cracked by frost that it will need replacing, not five years after it was fitted.

The long and the short of it is that now I do all door/window/conservatory work myself!

It started with the garage door. I wanted a replacement side-hinged one. Zenith quoted me £1500 and the door itself didn't look that great. So I went online and got an excellent quality powder-coated steel one for £500. Then off to B&Q for a set of 140mm frame fixings - £18.

Total cost = £518, total fitting time = 2 hours. Simples!

After that I fitted a new back door and window, fitted new windows in the garage and build a uPVC kit conservatory on the old base. I think I've saved myself in excess of £10,000, plus a whole load of hassle!
