About time someone had a rant about cyclists :laugh:.

Okay, so I was walking into UNI, with my friend. Just outside the UNI now...

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en...citMWrR9WSYCZ4bUS5o4kw&cbp=12,277.19,,0,15.51

We're at the junction, about to go up the side road. We're on the "give way" bit of white paint on the shared path.

Just checking it's okay to go into the road, when this lady on bike behind starts yelling "excuse me, excuse me...." over and over. Now, I wouldn't have a problem with this, if it was further down the path (where it's straight)...but when I'm waiting to cross at a junction I'm not going to jump out of you way.

She fussed something about it being a cycle path...though as I'm sure you can see from the streetview, even if you only used the bit nearer the road (Pedestrians only ), I would still end up having to cross the road on that bit of the shared path.

Now, to the lady in question...I won't start yelling at you to get out of my way when you're in front of me on the road and I'm cycling twice as fast as you can go....so please don't expect me as a pedestrian to jump out of your way so you can save 3 seconds.

*rant over*

Seems a bit of a poor design and rather odd as it looks like the bit further down might be a 20 zone. Seems to be asking for trouble. A similar route in Sheffield that's twice as wide that leads close to a university is getting redone as they don't think it's wide enough. They'd have a right laugh about that.

It's certainly an odd bit of planning, there seems to be nowhere for a ped to go (other than right across the path of a bike) to cross the road.

Perhaps she expected you to vault the fence at the end?

Whats the bet there's a rant on bike radar about young (deep voiced)students crossing roads at cycle lane junctions!!

haha...Maybe I should start wearing my helmet camera on the way into UNI...catch all these bloody cyclists on film .

I don't really get why they bother with the cycle paths around there anyway...the road is either 30mph or 20mph, with speeds usually being well observed. I've always seen motorists behave well to cyclists on the road.

Where as, at the other end of the road is the ring road (which certainly does not need paint on the ground for a cycle path)...which is a busy, scary main road for cyclists*, so surely a cycle lane would be more appropriate there.

*It doesn't bother me in the slightest, but if I was inexperienced it would be the nicest place to be.

i cant help but wonder if you would be on here moaning about the "stupid pedestrians on the shared path that wouldn't get out of the way" if it had been you on the bicycle ????

all the same, what a terrible bit of road/path planning

I wouldn't off. If I was to cycle into UNI one way, I would go up onto the shared path as it goes right into UNI...and saves going around and up a Norfolk Hill. On that I (on road bike, lycras, etc)...get overtaken by people on MTBs that are falling apart...just because if I'm on a shared path I'm happy to go around peds at walking pace.

Like I said, I could understand her having a problem if it wasn't right between the pedestrian crossing and another junction...if we were walking along the main straight and she said excuse me I would have moved over....just like I would expect if I was going along the tow path back home...even then I'd slow down for pedestrians. I also wouldn't repeatedly say "excuse me excuse me excuse me" without a gap...she was obviously doing it to make a "point".

Since getting back to UNI and walking about 3 miles everyday to get in and back I've become a lot more patient and respectful of pedestrians.

She'd be wrong even if you were walking in the cycle path - pedestrians are allowed to.

I said something like that to her...or attempted to.

This peds in cycle lanes does not work so well in say London though.I tend to find the people here much better mannered.(Thailand)

I tend to find people use the (cycle lane) at Waterloo as their own personal pavement at a guess which isn't a problem but it seems all take an no give.Just the opportunity to be an arrogant pain in the arse.

.

From my experience, the cycle paths are nearly always never in the most needed places. Probably because these areas are already a planning nightmare (hence the need for a safe path)and the LA's don't have the wit to design a path that works.

Looking at that street view it looks like the layout has been designed with only the school children in mind.

It appears to me that they just want to funnel the children away from the school and across the road. Nothing has been done to cater for any pedestrians going the other way.

Saying that, maybe they planned that pedestrians use the pavement on the other side of the road so the cycle path can be used for cyclists?

There's a pedestrian crossing there so I don't think so. No other way I could of gone the way I wanted...without ignoring the crossing and just crossing in the road.
