Keep Calm and OMG.......CAKES!!
I'm going to buy an external hard drive. I've seen a couple that I like and they both are saying USB 3.0
Everything that I've ever bought has been USB 2.0 (I think) so would they still be compatible with my laptop?

Yes it will work, but at USB2.0 speed

Don't expect blistering speeds, but they are good for backups. I use an external 1TB for backups on my desktop PC.

Thanks Fossyant.
I just want to back up photos and a few other bits and pieces. The ones I'm looking at are 500mb, how many photos will fit on one of those ?

I think you mean 500gb

Depends on the size of your photos but I would guess at somewhere in the order of 50,000 or more if you compress them.

Loads! If each pic is (say) 1Mb and you have a 500GB hard drive it's around half a million. In practice it depends on the size your camera makes (some can be 10Mb + each) which will mean a mere(!) 50,000 pics. Videos and MP3 music files typically take up more room. Happy storing.
