I don't get the yellow, red, and amber reflection from hiviz? Most hiviz jackets have only fluo yellow, which won't be visible at night, and white retro-reflectives, so you'd only get white reflected back. I agree that you'll get more area of retro reflectives with the hiviz, but I'm not sure it'll add anything useful to a legally set up bike.

LOL on the green christmas lights, I bet those were very effective.

I just go on when I'm driving, I pick out a cyclist at a distance much more easily when they're in reflective hi-vis gear.

I don't have a problem seeing lit cyclists when they have no hiviz. Even unlit ones aren't a problem. I don't need them to make like a 'kin UFO to coexist with them on the road.

What can be a little difficult is when you have a non-hiviz cyclist in a loose group of hiviz cyclists.

It all helps, but still doesn't stop the SMIDSY....... 10 flippin lights didn't help me this evening - at least they were all still on the bike, or rucksack, and fully lit after my auto interaction......

Indeed - my last off I was running a total of 5 lights on the bike (three front, two rear). If they're not paying attention, you haven't a snowball's.

As many as you can afford? Why?

Just curious if there might be some legal reason, distraction problems etc..?

I switched mine on tonight and it looks like the way police lights flicker. I dont want anyone thinking I'm a copper. Thank god they're white...

In addition to a set of battery lights, I have some Reelight, 'always on' flashers, that I bought in a fit of gizmo lust.

The set I have, the rear light mounts on the near side of the bike, but I believe they now produce an offside version too.

When I'm driving, especially in non lit up areas, I find the most distinctive feature of a cyclist in the distance is the reflection from the pedal reflectors.

I am well set up for front, the Hope Vision 2 and the two Tesco torches as a fill in for the beam on the Hope, makes for a bigger beam, must be good as I forgot to turn the hope down to flash and the Tesco's off the other night and some daft bint with a Dog steps into the road, stops and I stop and she cops for a facefull of white Led light "We only need to see you", which was ironic as she had just stepped out, I just said "I need to see where I am going as well and to see people who dont look where they are going" ! I mean, I dont think my lights are any brighter than then pulse laser cannons fitted to german cars nowadays.

On the rear, I have a Cateye TD610 (I think) the wide one and I had a Tesco flasher on my Night Vision jacket but the battery has gone, might get a couple of extra ones.

I try to mount them over to the right as it puts the drivers focus a bit further over, I notice having the bright fronts tends to make them stop when you have right of way as they arent sure what is coming its so bright, a car with a headlamp out, stops them bullying their way through.

I bought tyres with a reflective band on as I think we neglect the side visibility aspect, well a lot of riders just dress in black and ride with no lights, Ihave never seen so many, some cycle in a way that suggests they know they are doing wrong, jibbing onto the pavement as if they are genuinely concerned that they may get flattened, mainly teenage boys but also adults, ffs lights are less than a tenner a pair, is it so much of an effort to nip into a shop or is having lights considered uncool ?

One thing to bear in mind is that bright rear lights can be counter productive.

I was driving the other day and noticed a cyclist in the left hand lane of a two lane gyratory approaching a straight on / right split in the road. His lights were brighter than any that I have seen before, to the point of making it difficult to see past the lights and the cyclist was wearing black. Especially with the weather conditions creating glare on the screens. The lights were far brighter than standard rear car lights.

Any signals that this cyclist would have made would be pointless because they could not be seen. I initially held back in case he was turning right, but no visible signal, a road position that suggested straight on and I committed to passing him. A look in the rear view mirrors after I had passed the junction and he did actually turn right. (This was not a close shave as I had allowed to safely pass him before the juction)

The lights were highly visible but the interaction with other road users was limited because of the poor visibility of his arms and body.
