Went to specsavers a couple of weeks ago for eye test, went to pick up my new glasses yesterday, my vision was awful. was not happy after spending £320.00. had a word with the manager, who checked my eyes, he now tells me i have cataract in both eyes, the person who did the original eye test did not mention that. i now have to have cataracts done then another eye test. They said they would change the prescription after i have the cataract sorted and i might get a refund. not impressed with the service.

That's shocking. Your cataracts won't have developed in a couple of weeks.

I suspect that Specsavers service varies hugely with some branches being fantastic and others rubbish.

Couple of years ago I had new pair of glasses made that I found not acceptable. Had their optician do new eye test and new prescription. When glasses arrived focus fine but bad distortions eg left and right sides of laptop screen not parallel.

As prescription OK issue was apparently the non-prescription measurements (eye/pupil spacing, position worn, etc. (which is why I won't buy glasses online). New lenses made and problem persisted.

Full refund given without debate. Not SpecSavers.

Sorry to hear that.

Sounds like this wants pushing futher; pehaps a prod to their complaints / customer service dept then if you get no joy the review sites and Trading Standards perhaps..

When I got my first pair of varifocals they gave me a screaming headache. I put up with it for several weeks, as I was unsure what it takes to get used to them, but when I went back they did another eye test gave me new lenses, and that fixed it. He didn't say the original prescription was wrong, but it must have been. That was specsavers, but so are all mine, I've never been anywhere else.

I'm not really sure what to expect of glasses, none of the spex I've ever had have come anywhere near returning my vision to what it used to be before I needed them.

As prescription OK issue was apparently the non-prescription measurements (eye/pupil spacing, position worn, etc. (which is why I won't buy glasses online).
Online spex would be a complete non-starter for me, I broke my nose in a car crash, so I have hellz own bother finding frames with a wide enough bridge, followed by 2-3 weeks of painful trial and error as I try to get the nose pads set somewhere that doesn't hurt my nose. Then after that it's a toss-up whether the pupil position's still correct...

Not surprised with the OP,s experience tbh. Most of not all specsavers are franchises and as such hit and miss like halfrauds. Used them twice once for work for safety glasses had no choice but to use them, they got the varifocal prescription wrong twice in the end they had to use my normal opticians prescription and dimensions. Finally they got it right, sadly my company still uses them. Used them previous to the work glasses, the prescription was all good as was the frame. The problem was the finishing on the edge of the frame, it wasn't and as such I actually cut myself on the sharp edge. They refused to accept it was a problem until I threatened them with complaining to head office, result glass finished correctly.

I on the other hand have never had a problem with Specsavers, but it all depends on the optician doing your test. If you're somewhere where Specsavers have a high staff turnover I suppose you're more likely to meet a bad one.

Regarding the OP's optician missing cataracts that's simply incompetence.
I'm don't understand them saying come back after cataract surgery, one of the options with cataracts surgery is to have a persciption built into the replacement lens.

I think a full refund and a new optician is in order.

It's all change at Specsavers, they have a machine that does the eye test automatically now, and the optician just reviews it afterwards.

I have a congenital cataract in my left eye that I've know about for decades, but I've also had an age related cataract in my right eye since 2018, and nobody's told me until today.

When I was working in mental health I took a patient to Boots for an eye test. He brought with him the glasses he had been prescribed by Spec Savers. According to the Boots optician one pair of glasses appeared to be plain glass.

Specsavers are franchises, the performance of one is no reflection upon the performance of the next.

The SS I use has proven rather better over the years than the old, fashioned opticians near the new Drago Towers.
