The problem is that both some of the more astringent washing liquids and conditioners affect the water resistance of some outdoor clothing.

Some even go as far as suggesting that you need to rinse out the whole machine and powder tray before using their products

Of course, that in turn could simply be marketing as well

I use it but in moderation. I'm advised to put a full cap load in,but i put about a third of a cap load in. It still softens the clothes and gives them a hint,not an over powering stink of "summer meadows" and stuff.

I think the 'deservestoliveinyorkshire' was a bit harsh and cruel..... but she's probably right about the rest. ^_^
Luckily the Awesome Fairy (and no Reg, that's not you) hasn't come along and cursed me to wear hideous shirts for all eternity though I have seen it happen....
