On using a Buff as a face mask, it might not be ideal but it is always there. I'm unlikely to ever leave the house with something resembling a welder's mask on the off chance that I'll find a midge cloud. As I think has already been mentioned, it also easily covers the ears, keeping all of your orifices free of nasties.
