These things go viral very quickly, don't they - a friend emailed me a link to that video yesterday! He does that annoying thing of dumping everyone into a CC list rather than using BCC (I don't like my email address being circulated like that!) so I could see that lots of other people were sent the same message.

I was amazed and angered by the driving in that video. I suspect that heavy vodka consumption played a big role ...

Can't see it because it's blocked but I guess it's one of the thousands of Russian drving videos you can view nowadays. Lots of Russian motorists must have video cameras in their cars.

What I love is the way the people doing the filming see something crazy and still in progress going on ahead, and you can hear them saying 'wow, look at that' in Russian, but they simply carry on regardless as the madness continues ahead of them...no-one thinks to slow down even.

If they slowed for every spectacle they'd not make significant progress on their journeys. There responses seem to indicated that it's something that they take in their stride on a regular basis, a bit like this:

Frankly, I didn't yearn for a cycling holiday in Russia before*, and I even more don't now.

*Although I do have a vague yen to see the Steppes.

3. A truck-driver and passenger getting hamemred on whisky in the cabin. Whilst parked in the middle of a level crossing.

NT and I happened across a programme on telly about Outback Truckers - driving those big double trailer road trains. One driver was berating the driver in front for daring to slow down, saying those rigs can't just stop in a hurry, etc etc. She then overtook the slowing car, with much abuse.

And went straight over the level crossing with amber flashing lights that the car was slowing for. Pretty much the only thing that could put a dent in one of those trucks is a train! Nutter!

I've actually been thinking about some cycling in Russia, I'm having to go out to Moscow quite a bit with work and been thinking about taking my bike out with me, getting the train 100km or so out of the city and riding back in over a couple of days (off road). I've also had to drive across Moscow a few times, never saw anything as bad as in the video, but it can be a little exciting..
