Just heard a cyclist has been killed by a lorry corner of Theobalds Road, Southampton Road in London. Lorry still there, police taped off the area. Our security guard said he saw the cyclist under the wheels.

Very sad and shocking.

Is that near Holborn? Wife rang me a little while ago saying there was a fatality there and to check I was still coming home tonight.

Terrible news, my condolences to the cyclist and the family.

Surely this now needs firm committed action from the government. It is unacceptable that this happens repeatedly. More needs to be spent on training and advertising to cyclists and lorry drivers. Lorry drivers need better mirrors.

I hope the Evening Standard pick up on this and cyclists learn the lesson that they should never ever get close to turning lorries.

Boris might do something, ban lorries in London for instance.

I know what thelondonpaper will do; give it a lot of coverage and emphasize how dangerous cycling is and how irresponsible cyclists are.

A sad day for sure, but don't lay all the blame on the lorry driver, we don't know the facts, maybe the cyclist was undertaking, or trying to do something just a stupid given the way I have seen how many cyclist ride in London I'm surprised its only 1 a week, I'd have thought more like 50 a day.

Not nice in anyones books but you have to be plain stupid to think a soft target like a cyclist is going to come off better than a 7.5+ tonne lorry.

Hmmm. They're not there for fun, you know ... if you're happy to see all the shops empty within a week, then go ahead and ban lorries from London. Training cyclists to keep out of the danger zones strikes me as a more constructive idea.
Condolences to the cyclist's family.

Recently saw a PoB nearly become a statistic by whizzing up the inside of a lorry just as the lights changed. I was waiting behind. A slight left curve in the road and the lorry just HAD to overtake, missed the PoB by literally inches. Plenty of cyclists don't know how to behave around lorries, but equally in this case the lorry driver was an idiot. I caught up with the PoB and gave him a bollocking, for which he was grateful.

Sad story. Thoughts for the cyclist and family.

That doesn't detract from the fact that a) Lorries may need better or more different mirrors and ;) further or additional, supplementary or updated training for lorries may help. No one is playing the blame game here (yet), but it's quite easy to see how these things can be avoided by action on both sides. At the very least training would not hurt anyone, even if you have had it before.

Actually I would agree that banning them during rush hours would be of enormous benefit and little inconvenience to haulage companies and those employing them.

Possibly, although it would be a brave or stupid cyclist who'd go blithely zipping up the inside of an artic at traffic lights, trusting to the fact that there are three mirrors on the passenger side instead of two. The driver still has to look in them (and with the best will in the world, there are times when a driver is looking somewhere else - we've still got only two eyes), and all the mirrors in the world won't allow the driver to see through the corner of the trailer when the lorry is at an angle. Extra training may be helpful, however.

Between 6am and 10 pm.
