I like pop songs. Don't ask me to define exactly what I mean by pop songs but it's usually something uplifting and, in a way, disposable. Disposable in that they don't really stretch your thought processes (they don't intend that), they are a kind of frivolous fun. Not that they feelings of well being they induce are frivolous! Far from it!
They're also the sorts of songs that I can sometimes forget until I hear them again. Ask me my favourite ones and I'm inclined to mention The Undertones ('Teenage Kicks' is often cited but I rate it highly too, and also 'You Got My Number'), The Smiths did some crackers; definites for the my class of 'pop song'. Wire's 'Outdoor Miner' too.
I was reminded this morning (courtesy of one of wife's motown tapes) of one those I had forgotten; 'The Shoop Shoop Song'. It recalled a time for me when I was walking home from a party at some silly am time. I was somewhat, shall we say, chemically enhanced but I recall deciding that 'The Shoop Shoop Song' was the perfect pop song! (I also decided that it was ok to like Barry Manilow, but we'll gloss over that!).
So, treat me to your favourite pop songs... or give me your treatise on pop songs, or simply rejoice and relive a 'pop' moment, whichever.
