A close call with a cyclist tonight. I was in the car and stopped up at a junction. Looked right, clear then as I was about to pull out s*it a cyclist right in front of me! I can only think she was in the "blind spot" where the column between my windscreen and door window is and I didn't see her. She was not best pleased which I can't blame her for,but one has to forget the episode tommorow is another day no one hurt.Just feel bad I caused another cyclist a fright.

On another note yesterday,I stopped to help a fellow cyclist put their chain back on that had fallen off and wrapped itself around the pedal crank, so I can't be all bad!

Know how you feel Fifelad. Several months ago I passed a cyclist far too close. I was in the wrong and I won't forget it. Fortunately he didn't wobble, we didn't collide, so no harm done. We all make mistakes and hopefully they come to nothing, all we can do is learn from it and be better drivers for it.

Well done with the chain, just hope if I meet a cyclist in need I'll be up for it, well done.

Thanks bud It's a rarity that an incident like that occurs to me. Makes you think "what if" but you can't dwell on it!

The fact that you recognize what you did wrong, and don't try to blame it on the cyclist like so many other motorists do, is great.

Sometimes accidents happen, no one was hurt, and you will have hopefully learnt from it.

We have all been there. It does happen, it isn't a sin and it doesn't make you a 'moton', whatever one of those is.

Many years ago I was driving an aged and beloved godfather on a long, cross-country route. He mentioned my speed (which was very high) and when I didn't slow he remarked that if there had been a cyclist on some of the bends I'd probably have hit them.

'Simmered' is not the right word. I was livid. Scarlet with internalised rage. I slowed anyway and we began to enjoy the drive.

Many hours later I realised he was quite right and was right to have spoken out.

I've been a keen cyclist for as long as I can remember, but few of us are saints.

Couldn't agree more. Most of us are road users in more than one mode ( cyclist, bikers, motorists, pedestrians), we all get it wrong sooner or later - nice to see a cyclist come motorist admit he nearly took out another human being, but thankfully on this occasion, nothing happened.

If Fifelad was the cyclist and was in here moaning about a car driver pulling out and nearly wiping him out you'd all be going on about Smidsy and calling the driver a nob/tosser etc etc

its sooo fickle in here at times ;)

But Fifelad made a mistake, acknowledged his mistake and showed remorse and humility by posting on here, so it is reasonable that the community here will have respect for him as a result. The drivers that get called tossers are the ones that make a mistake, refuse to acknowledge they made a mistake, blame everyone else but themselves, and haven't got the balls to accept responsibility for their actions. Two totally different situations.
