I just trued my first wheel! Really chuffed (although I now know that it isn't that difficult!). Thanks to @mickle for his thread :-)
It's something I've wanted to do for ages but never had the nerve to try (I'm a bit crap at things like that). The LBS usually charges £10 so quids in!!!

Anyone one else done something new for the first time today, learned a new skill or saved a bit of cash?

I recently did a beginners bike maintenance course, I now feel almost evangelical about chinging tyres and adjusting brakes! I've just signed up for the advanced course, so will be joining you in the wheel truing club soon!

I need to learn this! Is it actually possible without levers???
Yes you can, there is a video on youtube of someone demonstrating how, I followed it one day and found it surprisingly easy

...6 months later I can truly say (touch wood) that wheel is the strongest/truest/smoothest rolling wheel I possess.
And if a complete muppet like me can do it, anyone can....
Hmm. Even with a trueing stand and dishing tool I can get a wheel true and round and tight but not all three at once. Maybe it's easier with a new rim.

I went to the doctors this morning, as I entered the surgery she (she!*) looked at me and the first thing she said was 'You're looking good Mr. D, have you been working out?'

(*this part is asterisked because I don't want it to be misconstrued as surprise that the doctor was a woman, more surprise that a woman went on to make this comment about me, OK?)

It was unfortunate that after that we turned to the subject of Prostate Cancer and the checking for it, but oh, the glow of that first comment...

Well done!

My manliness rating went up by 68% today after I punctured on my way home ...

I found a very tiny piece of metal in my tyre and the only way I could get it out was using my teeth!

Apart from that, I decided to try out my new 'no-tyre-levers' technique. (I did have tyre levers with me, but have worked out how to get tyres off and back on again using just my bare hands.)

My new motto is "Manly Men Don't Need Tools"! :becool::laugh:
Having boosted his 'manliness rating'by 68%, @ColinJ manliness now stands at 69, which is a handy number indeed, if you want to get manly, with a woman, I presume.

:thumbsup::laugh::thumbsup:

On impulse I drove to Spa cycles in Harrogate and bought all the parts I would need to build a front dynamo wheel for my bike. I then went home and laid them all out on the carpet and set on building the wheel. Never having done it before I used some YouTube vids for reference.

6 months later I can truly say (touch wood) that wheel is the strongest/truest/smoothest rolling wheel I possess.

6 months is a long time to build a wheel though.

Is it still a sign of manliness that you build your own wheels though? Perhaps we should ask the other halves of those that do that question?

Is it not more manly, in this day and age, to do the modern equivalent of sneaking off to the other, more skilful blokes cave and stealing his bow and arrows, thus making you a better provider and him having to make another (the modern equivalent being 'buying a set of wheels')?

And to the man afraid of spiders, get out of here you wuss...
