Set off to the gym this morning, but as it was a nice day I thought I'd cycle the long way to make it a ten miler instead of 1.
Less than a mile in I was finding it tough. I've got a cold, and it was really windy, the combination was making me feel chesty and short of breath.
At what I thought was 3 miles (turns out it was less than2!) I decided to take a short cut across the field - not the best idea after the rain!! I ended up grumpy, pushing the bike, and with wet feet.
Fortunately it's downhill from there on to the gym (4 miles total)
I did get my second wind and managed to work up a sweat inside to make up for it.
Do you ever get days like that, when even the shortest ride feels like a marathon?!

Hoh yes, and quite often they're when I think I've done my best to prepare.

Yes indeed,my tale i was on antibiotics for a very bad rash on my arm.But my great next door neighbour asked me if i would go out on my bike with his brother, sure .
Well brother was a youngish tri athelete, doh.
So off we went, well it soon became apparent to me i was not well,we had only done 15 miles,to Otley when i had to stop. After climbing out of Asquith i was dead,so he brought me home at 8 mph,oh the shame.
Just over one week later i did my fave ride to Yockenthwaite near Buckden,46 fast warm miles.
Don't worry we all have those types of days.Just add it to your cycling memories.Plus never go out when you feel ill.

You shouldn't be exercising if you've got a cold! Give yourself a chance to recover and don't spread viruses all over the gym equipment for others to pick up!

Cold viruses can cause inflammation and fluid to build up in the membrane surrounding your heart [Pericarditis] reducing heart function so it's not a good idea to exercise too hard when you're below par, even if you think 'it's just a cold'....

Yes if you feel bad on the bike due to a cold slow down or don't go out. You'll not only give other people the damn thing but slow your own recovery.

I feel like crap today I have man flu, I went out and did 10 miles and it nearly killed me

I promise I didn't sneeze on anything.
I'm probably more of a risk to the customers at work:shy:

I did a couple of 50 miles in the Peak district in the space of a week once, plus commuting. I felt fine. A couple of weeks later, I had a day off, so off I went into the Peaks again.

Made about 5 miles, and I was shot. I had to limp home on the bike, I was absolutley spent. I've no idea why. I have done a couple of century rides, but that 10 mile round trip nearly did for me.
