Just make sure if you use the thick black gloopy stuff that there is a "run off" for standing water and the roof can drain freely

If it needs replacing soon, bite the bullet and have it covered in Firestone EPDM, you can go over your old felt, just removing the perimeter bits. One piece sheet, no seams to fail, no worries and looks better too. It's a doddle to fit, any DIY'er could do it or any handyman, no need for a pro rubber roof fitter for what you have described.

My Dad had the extension flat roof on his house relaid in fibreglass (I actually think they put a slight pitch on the roof as well?).

But no point doing that if you're having it ripped out soon..
