Anyone got any suggestions of a cheap and robust material to make some long mudguard/fender flaps.

I just bought one off the shelf for a brompton at sjscycles and adapted it to my rando bike

Yep, the Brompton mudflap is quite thin and floppy although the material itself feels really strong and resistant to tearing. On my rando bike I curved it along the inside of the mudguard and attached it to the mudguard stays, which gives it a curve which makes it hold it's shape, even into a strong headwind.I think the Brompton one might be *slightly* too soft a material - on my Brompton, a strong headwind will force it out of shape. I've seen numerous recommendations for tractor/truck inner tube, or damp proof membrane - can't say I've tried either though.
