(Tow)Ball and socket or some other means of attaching a trailer?

Looking at various options of fastening a trailer(heavy at times) to the "Beast O'Burden".

If I use a Fifth Wheel type, it'll need to clear the rear wheels, as the mount can be placed over the rear, in front of the rear wheels.

Any ideas on what can be used?

When I had plans to build a trailer, the best (non-expensive) solution I found was to bodge a castor. These can be suitably heavy duty. They are also cheap so you can afford to experiment.

Weight of trailer
Empty: 70lbs
loaded: Upto 600lbs.

Load can vary as it wasn't bought for just one type of item. Jumbo bagged when smaller loose items will be carried.

still think , steel open frame pyramid with tow ball on top and a light weight trailer coupling will be over kill . no fear of breakage , secure and solid . Pillow block is another option and a big bolt .
flat plate pillow blocks are available, (say 20mm ) and ht bolt into a captive nut
