filling your car tank up

now fuel prices are so high do you still put the same amount of fuel in to top up as you did a year ago . i ve stopped looking at the price now and go for the litres sign instead (20 lts) now ever time as this gets me to work and back for 2 weeks .

This is of course true although difficult to measure, but all things considered I prefer to do it that way.

If F1 teams worry about carrying an extra quarter kilo when they have 750 BHP on tap I'm not going to lug 30 litres of petrol round in my 1.4 Astra just for the hell of it.

70 quid to fill her up. Scary stuff. Yes - I fill her to the brim every time. I work 35 miles from where I live so get through a full tank fairly quickly

I tend to just put £40 in whenever I've got about quarter of a tank left.... it used to be pretty full when I did that, not anymore though!

I fill the tank regardless of cost as I use it fairly rapidly even at 65+mpg. I can more easily aim for 600-650 miles per tank full.
I have a new target though, I read on EcoModder that there is a chap with the same engine as mine getting 94mpg. My best was 84mpg (on extra virgin olive oil).

I did try only filling half a tank but it meant a lot more trips out of the way to fill up. The extra weight doesn't make any difference to economy, with my car, but would with handling.

I monitored it for 5 years with part tank, full tank, empty boot, boot full of tools and many other variables and there was more variation due to weather then my tank of fuel or weight of tools.
Windows open increased consumption by 10% where as roof bars added 15% even with no load on top. Air con or not made no difference as it is climate control and it continues to run the pump as required.

Martin Lewis was going on about getting more miles from your tankful & said to only use aircon when needed then some bloke from, I think, VW called to say basically what Night Train had said!
