Filtering passed cyclist?

Having a shiny new road stick to blat about on I found myself doing a stretch with a series of lights, now wanting to keep a good pace I found the lights to be a pain but I didn't stress it and simply slotted into the queue centre lane and waited for the lights to change instead of fighting the traffic.

Some beard on a racked up MTB with manky old panniers kept catching up with me at each set of lights, he insisted on filtering by weaving up the inside and outside to the lights just to overtake me - only to be dropped again as soon as the lights changed, he truly was being an inadequate.

Some tried-hard MAMIL on an over-priced road bike was desparate to do a pointless overtake between each set of lights, yet chose to sit in the queue rather than make use of the ASL that was put there for his benefit. Why he wanted to race me, I don't know: I carried on at my normal pace as clearly his ego was rather fragile.

It was stretch of dual and there was no ASL to be found, he was also filtering and then strangely taking up position in the gutter once he had reached the lights which kind of defeated the object of filtering, he was also only just making position in time for the lights change so his weaving in and out between stationary vehicles was a bit silly as well.

It wasn't a race, he was just sadly out paced and engaging in the cycling version of a comb over hair cut to make him feel better.

I see it quite often: I overtake or filter past a slower cyclist on an expensive machine, and they, seeing my ancient commuter MTB, feel the need to make some kind of point. God knows why - I'm only cycling to work so I'm in no great hurry. I suppose it's a bit like car drivers who have to absolutely get past so they can join the back of the next queue. All a bit sad, really.

It certainly sounds like one of you was desperate to make a point.
Sucking his wheel at 10 mph for every stretch between lights for a mile or more would have got a bit old. It wasn't a race I simply wasn't in the mood for a pootling ride, the filtering at the junctions though was simply a "WTF" moment as he was all over the place and then he was in my way again.

That is not what i'm saying.
The bottom line of it is a bicycle needs more space than the width of it's handle bars for safety sake, as a cyclist needs to move around objects which other vehicles just look over and they are effected by strong winds.
A car traveling down a straight road won't need to adjust its position for most things that a cyclist will.

thats better.

I have no idea why they would be annoyed. Maybe they should not be out on the road on their bike if they expect no other traffic? Sounds as if they might possibly be a regular on Commuting and believe all the guff spouted by people with helmetcams, and see "issues" where there are none.

Or maybe they are just social inadequates - although my view is that most people with helmetcams fall into this bracket anyway.
It was a bit strange, before I got to him he seemed to be shaking his head and mouthing something everytime a car passed him. I did make more room than others as I passed, you never know what he might wip out:crazy: , seemed a bit of a nutter^_^

So why be an eye for an eye? Give the cyclist the space they require.
Mmm having a go again Gaz? Reminds me of the Ali v Forman where they traded jab for jab:boxing: If you took the time to read the thread you might have seen my give more room than others post.^_^ And why would you assume I drove in a bad way with this cyclist?

When have I ever had a go? Mistaking me for someone else ;)

I just don't see your logic, whilst you may have left more room than other drivers, was your room sufficient enough?
Your original post seems to suggest that you thought he filtered a little bit too close to you and you didn't like it so you purposefully passed him at the same distance.

I think that is the pessemist in you;) I only said he filtered then I passed. My point was there didnt seem a reason for his annoyance, as there were no too close passes that I saw. He just seemed very annoyed?

Col, why have you started this in cafe. You should have advanced up the forum and waited at the head of General Cycling, carefully mind.

I thought the cafe was for any chat? Feel free to move it if you think it should be.
