Finally a response! - Anglian Bus Company

Around 2 months ago I had a problem with one of the local bus companies. I reported it to the police and after 2 months I've finally had a responce from the bus company.

Thanks for the further information, which helped us find the driver responsible.

The driver in question has been interviewed regarding the allegations that you made, and has been warned about his future behaviour.

We are also in the process of reminding ALL drivers the severe consequences that could result if, by a moments loss of concentration, a cyclist was knocked off their bike by a bus. This will also feature heavily in our future ongoing driver training and appraisal.

If you do have any further problems with ANY of our drivers, please do not hesitate to contact me with details, and I can deal with it immediately.

Yours sincerely

Andrew Pursey
Director
Anglian Bus
I did ask the police to contact me to tell me what they had done at the begining of the week. I have a voicemail on my phone, but no credit to Sunday, so will have to wait a little while to hear what they have to say.

I don't know if I should believe anything done but it kind of helps put the case to bed.

If anyone else has problems with the anglian bus company then why not email their managing director through his own email address, rather than wasting time with post/their standard email:

Oh come on - that's a fob off if I've ever heard one. He's said everything that he thinks that will appease you and it's worked.

Well. It doesn't suprise me but it's finally a responce. Not sure what I should get sent?

My original letter (sent via post) and subsquently via email said:

Dear the Managing Director,

I was recently involved in a near collision with one of your buses, then
suffered verbal abuse from your driver and another near collision later
on down the road witnessed by a member of the general public. You should
be well aware of this, as I have already filed a police report
(xxxxxxxxxx-xxxx) and a PC Wright has already contacted you. I feel that it
is my duty to also contact your company in person, as I would like to
know the full outcome from your company as well as via PC Wright.

This is by no means the first time that I have suffered either abuse by
a driver, or the first time that I have had to take means to actively
avoid a potential road accident caused by a third party. However your
driver's total disregard of highway code rule 163 and further lack of
professionalism regarding the incident I consider to be a direct
representation on your company. After the incidents happened I went to
the bus station in the town centre to make a complaint and at this point
I was in a state of mild shock, close to tears and stuttering. As your
buses don't stop there I was given the relevant contact information for
your company.

I am aware that there was CCTV footage on the bus but I do not know if
this will cover the exterior and show just how close the bus came to me,
or just the later argument. Had your driver not intentionally pulled
along side me I would have let the incident go – there was a police car
in traffic just after the incident which I ignored. I would like to
apologise that my language or hand gestures might not be the most polite
for the situation, but my shock should not take away from the incident.

I use a bike to save money while at uni as well as to keep fit, however
my confidence of going through the very congested town centre has
diminished after this incident and if I was to choose to take public
transport instead because of the incident, it would have a direct
financial implication to me which I would hold you liable for.

I therefore am going to suggest a mutually benefiting agreement. There
are small, specialist, 'bullet' cameras which fit to cyclist's helmets
or handle bars which can be used evidence in events such as this, or
more serious ones. Prices for these start at around £100 and I am highly
considering purchasing one of these so that there will be video evidence
of any future incidents with either your company, a competitors or
another road user. As I am a university student something of this value
isn't the most affordable thing so I therefore I believe your company
should help subsidise the purchase of one as a form of compensation and
apology for this incident. I am willing to send footage of both normal
cycling and any footage of poor driving to your company, of which you
could use to help develop more comprehensive cycling awareness training
footage.

I have as of yet not contacted my CTC legal advice line on this and do
not intend on.

I would like to point out that I have travelled down Earlham Road with
the Connect bus company and the two drivers were very patient when it
came to cyclists. There were times that some cyclist's total lack of
observation really scared me and had it not been for the driver's
patience and attention to the road the cyclist's may have put themselves
in harm.

I am happy to be contacted either via email or my mobile phone. Due to
the expense of phoning from my end I will not be able to ring you, but
am happy to have discussions via the phone. I am also interested in
seeing a copy of the CCTV footage to further improve my cycling and
safety on the road.

Yours Faithfully,

I think wk1 & Mr Paul are being a tad over-pessimistic. Ok, so it sounds like a standard response, and it could mean absolutely stuff all has actually been done, but what else can you expect? 'The driver has been identified, and if you would care to attend the garage at 11.00 this Thursday, he will be publicly flogged'?

Maybe some action was taken. We'll never know. But we can know for sure that if we never complain, even at the risk of getting fairly anodyne and possibly untrue responses, nothing will ever happen. I think you done good, and I take the optimist's view that you might actually have achieved something. God knows just letting off steam on these boards never will.

That's cos they don't give a ****.

Thomas - sorry to say you've been well and truly duped.

Do you really think that the bus company actually " interviewed" the driver or had a brief chat with him in the staff canteen. And the warning - what verbal, written, on his driving record. Don't make me laugh

Come on......

I'll admit I did try changing the title but it only change the subject on the first post.

However, after 2 months the fact that I've wasted a bit of their time is better than nothing. At this stage I'm also past it, I just will never use their company.

Now I have the helmet camera any further problems with them can be posted publically and eventually local press might get some interest (if anything else is caught).

I had to write a letter to the First bus company regarding another incident. I can't imagine that will get anywhere.

I still need to check my voicemail (sunday is credit day) to see what message the police left....probably some standard stuff too.

I'd like to point out I'm very very skeptical about the responce I did have, but at this stage I'm not really planning on taking things further with it and I'm happy just to hear back. Get over with it. If it happens again the bus might be a wing mirror short....or I'll just say "Oi, I know Andy" (the MD) to see if that gets a reaction from the driver ;).

Call their bluff. They say they are keen to re-educate drivers etc, so ask them if they are willing to take part in a campaign. Link to my newspaper article about the First bus campaign, link to the Warrington bus leaflet and post a copy of the e-mail to one of your 'friendly local papers. I'd be interested to see how positively they respond to that.

Where is your first newspaper article? I might email the local paper and see if they're interested.

I did have a letter of complaint about drivers and the bus company published in the student paper but I think the local paper would be more interested in something like this.

Here. I think the GCR campaign was a little simplistic, but it was good at the time. It's worth a punt I reckon.....

So what do people think I should do, email back to the bus company suggesting a more public campaign or email him and copy in the newspaper?

What do we think the best bet to "call his bluff" is?

I would suggest you do both. Suggest the campaign and at the same time carbon copy the newspaper. Just my opinion of course, others might not agree....

The other thing to make clear is that 2 months ago I reported this to the Police. The Police officer said that he had told the MD and that he was going to talk to the driver, having promised to speak to the driver personally.

2 months later the driver gets spoken to. Surely he should of been spoken to when the Police told the company? The police's handelling has hardly been great either.
