I think it's safe to assume that they won't exactly be rushing to use the new law (this is after all the first conviction under a law that's been around for 10 months). It's not intended for anything other than obvious and blatant offenders...indeed, what it's really intended to do is bring about a change in the motorway mindset, so the kinds of people who might be likely to do this sort of thing (and yes, they know who they are) are encouraged not to.

And then of course because I've eased off the accelerator to get my stopping space back, the person behind me overtakes and cuts in and ...

Middle laners don't bother me. (I don't do it because I tend to drive the speed limit, and would rather not be responsible for causing mass apoplexy). Tailgaters on the other hand…

Very bad driver. Apart from the use of the camera while driving he is cutting over to the slow lane too much and should not have gone over to the slow lane when there is a sliproad full of cars joining the motorway.

Using the term 'slow lane' is pretty worrying. It is the inside lane - slowness should have nothing to do with it.

In general I think it is fair to say:

Use the inside lane when it is clear ahead, with these exceptions:

• When overtaking slower moving vehicle(s), move back into the inside lane when it is safe to do so
• To avoid being blocked in by a faster moving vehicle in an outer lane

I am not advocating lane hogging or blaming one group or another. I am just really raising the issue that about 90% of the time the driver deemed to be "lane hogging" is driving at the legal limit. When the legal limit is strictly enforced (in a average speed check area) the problem magically goes away.
So is it that those doing 70 should be inconvenienced and slowed down to 60 by being pushed into lane 1 to allow those who are speeding to have free run of lanes two and three.
On other roads, illegal driving is not generally tolerated. On the motorway the mob seems to rule.

I would be quite happy for all motorways to have a 70 average speed check throughout. End of problem.

This is a very important point - Who are we moving over for?

On a typical 3 lane motorway we have
Lane 1 doing 60. Caravans, lorries and dawdling cars.

Lorries will be doing 56 not 60.

But you can console yourself with the thought that the only way to prevent that would be to drive so close to the car in front that it's physically impossible for anyone to cut into the space. Assuming you don't do that because it's both stupid and dangerous, you are to be commended.

All roads would work better if we were to be more collaborative and way less competitive.

Driver-less cars will do that in a few years. Driver-less only lanes on a motorway will be a start until all motorways are driver-less.

Or of course we could try a bit of lateral thinking and give up on the idea of overtaking lanes altogether - seems to work in the US, and they make better use of available road space 'cos you don't have an entire lane reserved for the 15% of people happy to be 'slow'.
