*Nightmare* ride home last night: high gusting winds, streaming rain-borderline-sleet, freezing cold, sheets of water across the road all the way home, and me still in my shorts. Thank God I took my gloves (for the first time this winter) - even with them my index fingers felt like they were going to drop off; if I hadn't had them...well, it doesn't bear thinking about. 'Course it's lovely again this morning...

Felt exactly the same this morning. Never known my fingers be so cold!! Was struggling to brake or change gear

Same for me but with toes too last night. then made the mistake of getting in the shower before they had thawed out - double pain!!

Cycled to work in bad snow, visibility was right down as it was coming down so thick 'n' fast.
Had to take my cycling glasses off as I cycled as I couldn't see a bloody thing through them.
Got into work and my eyes were badly bloodshot through the snow getting into them.

Had trouble peeling my now soaked gloves off, my hands were the colour of boiled lobsters, had to immerse them in a sink of cold water.
They tingled all evening.

Poxy weather.

Yeah, I vowed I wouldn't let the weather stop me and I will not. The gloves are getting packed from now on!

They reckon the Midlands are having some more later this evening.
It's all started to thaw on the grassed areas now.
My peepers were shot despite wearing a baseball cap and having the peak pulled down as well.

I'm definitely wearing two pairs of gloves later.

I had some new Altura gloves on last night, £30 from LBS, my hands were bone dry when I got home, and warm, the rest of me not so much, granted

The second item down, or the black 'uns half way down the page. (I chose blue 'cus they match my bike when I returned to Solihull).

Land Rover were the 'Halfwits' who spends £100 on a pair of gloves for me. :-) but it was BLOODY cold.

My tip is to put your gear on the radiators, put it on well before you leave the house, eat breakfast in it and then leave the house, glad for the cold air to cool you.

I have stuck my gloves in the microwave before now.

Had a great ride in, was cold but not so bad, the overshoes went on to take the edge off it, that worked.

Got to work and the showers were frozen so a bit whiffy today.

Which version? I nearly lost my fingers to frost bite last night wearing crappy Sealskinz gloves. So I'm in the market for a decent pair. This morning I wore my Aldi cheapy gloves and I was nice and toasty.

My hands were toasty and dry (thanks to Crackle's seal-skinz). Feet, ears and face weren't!

I’ve done my sums. In rural Warwickshire, with an ambient of -2 C, and riding speed or 18 mph through virtually still air, the ‘Equivalent Skin Temperature’ was -9 C.

My Thinsulate woolie gloves did fine. No extra headgear though.

When the Equivalent Skin Temperature gets down to minus 25 C, is not advisable to stay out for more than 30 minutes.


Does anyone remember the winter of 81/82? We had -25 C ambient in Birmingham? You know, the one after Mt St Helens went up. Now think. All that particulate matter cooling the atmosphere. Now think of Chinese power stations.
