Nothing mega for a lot of you guys perhaps, but I am proud of myself anyway

6.8 miles in 36 minutes, Including 0.2 miles at 9.2% incline.

The incline killed me, but at least it was only a mile in. Anything to be proud of here??

Well done. You're already faster than me after 24 years of doing it. !

I didn't make the change from motorcycle to pushbike until I was 27, and walked one of my hills for 13 years !

Mind you, this is Bristol we're talking about and I was riding an old 10-speed. In retrospect, I wonder if I ever used the 52 tooth front cog.

Personally thats the ideal size of commute you want. My commute is 7 miles. Give it a few weeks and see how much time it takes then. You have done the hard part thats starting commuting by bike. It gets easier, well done

Everyone's got to start somewhere, no point comparing yourself to other cyclists, just compare yourself to yourself and watch the improvement.

Thanks for the encouragement!
The cars seemed to be quite generous, but I planned a route to avoid parked cars etc, maybe put an extra 5 mins on journey

This is the hill big hill

I think the worst part of it is that the road is in a bad way, wheels are slipping (trek 7200 hybrid) quite badly. I dont seem too good on the hills

Tasty Hill. No shame in struggling up it. You always will - its just that you'll struggle up it a bit faster as you get fitter.

My theory is to do the first half well within your capabilities, and then attack the second half, so that you are out of breath as you reach the top. Its surprising how many people you can beat up a hill like that.

Good to have at least one decent hill, and best that it's on the way to work - rather than on the homeward journey.

I'm glad of my hill because it almost prepares me for the Mendips or Cotswolds on a Sunday.

sorry about that, but i will aim for 36 in not too distant future

Ten out of ten for the commute ... seven out of ten for the maths

I'm relieved. I've been commuting regularly and my fastest elapsed time is about 84 minutes. I worked out how long you would take to do my journey: 84 minutes! You'll pass me, once you have mastered that hill, but I'm glad it was not the first day you went out.

In mitigation, I have a lot of traffic lights and pedestrians and cars and other cyclists to deal with. I respect red lights, only filter when it's safe and generally don't go crazy. I'd say was speed is about average for London: on the straight I pass quite a few cyclists and quite a few pass me.

Very good first cycle and you will shave a good chunk off it by just refining the route.
