I was joined by a BSO who was doing it to the left of traffic.

You realise BSO refers to the bike they are riding and not the rider, unless it was a ghost bike with no rider .
I used to ride a BSO to work and but I have only been called a BSO in non-cycling related situations .

Pulled to one side to let you go through or through concern for their shiny cars?

Having commuted near a college for a few years and seen some of the students cycling 'skills' I wouldn't allow them within 3 ft of my car!
