Been commuting since April 08 and not come close to a fall. Cycled almost every day through all weathers and all times of the night and early mornings. Frost, ice, rain, traffic jams etc.

Cycling to work this morning 06:45am and temp lost concentration. Looked over my shoulder on a quiet road as i heard vehicle coming. Vehicle was over 200 m away and the road i was on was single track with passing points. as i looked around i was disorientated by the curb where the passing point was and got to the point where i avoid the collision with the curb or ride the collision??? I rode the collision , hit a traffic barrier, went over the bush, which was clearly there to prevent cars going down the ditch. I landed in the ditch on opposite side of bush, picked myself up and climbed back over bush / railing to the road where the vehicle had stopped to see if i was ok. In embarressment i brushed myself down put the chain back on my bike (which was the only damage caused) thanked the motorised for checking on my welfare and peddled off without checking my grazed leg or if i had lost anything out of my pockets. Thankfully for me no harm done. Good learning curve!

Not sure if my skull cap contributed to my losing my balance. I put it on when its cold but it whistles w in my ears where the holes are which must effect balance ??

I also went on my Genesis Mountain bike this morning as it was very wet with lying water and i thought i would give it a go because of the hydraulic brakes. The mountain bike is much harder on the road and as a result i was working much harder

My normal commute bike is a Scott with V Brakes which is fast, smooth but brakes not as good in the wet. I will stick with the Scott commute in future and stick with the Mountain bike for the ........Mountain

No harm done and its not put me off.

All ok, only a graze to my left leg to show for the fall. Its hard to believe i have no other experience of coming off. I not only commute to work but ride several nights a week in the dark on the trans pennine trail in all weathers etc (The hope 1 helps). I have recently been doing the red run at Llandegla (twice last Friday) like somthing off extreme tv and no falls. Yet the simple commute to work and i come a cropper. I do consider myself a safe and considetate cyclist but it just shows to expect a fall at some point.

bummer but anything you ride off from ...

I get that, drifting concentration sometimes, not good at all

I had one the other day, coming down the hill, car pulls out in front of me, nothing wrong with that, but there is a ped on the zebra crossing right after which i didn't see. started to brake but due to leaves on the road i didn't want to pull to hard on the front brake as i could lose it, so gentle with that one but the rear locked up and started to swerve from side to side as i corrected it. v.scary as i thought i was going down, but didn't

I know what you mean about the MTB irony....perhaps its just that you HAVE to concentrate more on a fast off road DH track and so are more alert....riding on the road at "dark" o'clock in the morning (straight out of a warm bed) with nothing to do but pedal in a straight line on a quiet road....can mean that you loose concentration more

either way, glad to hear you are Ok.

I had my first fall last night ..... tried to overtake another cyclist on a cycle path by trying to cross over the pedestrian path. My bike's front wheel glanced over the slight ridge separating the two paths and I went down. Embarrassing. It has slightly frightened me as I am only 6 weeks into cycling. A few grazes, chain came undone and lots of embarrassment.

Taken the plunge again this morning and cycled into work, a lot more wary though.

Is there a good thread on here about winter cycling and slippery surfaces?

Hi Kaid - glad to hear you got back on. The only thing I can suggest is take the ridge at a 45 degree angle enables you to not clip the wheel or loose too much momentum - if you're going too slowly avoid the ridge. Some people change their tyres over the autumn and winter but depends what bike you have.

Nearly came off today at Karon beach but it was bloody hot and I think I was tired.Just delivering the bike back to the shop when I cocked up getting onto the path bit leading to the shop.Almost went over with the bike dragging me left, with it's weight.Got a cut on my shin and also realised the woman in the shop was watching me act the :blush:

I feel like I could... TAKE ON THE WORLD!!
Ive only come off once so far but it was very early into me starting to ride again. I didn't get more than 3 meters from my front door  It had been raining the night before and my path slopes up. I got out of the garage, and shot off at a fast speed from the off, swung it round to go up the path and the bike went out from under me and I landed with a bump.

Fortunately no injuries except a bruised ego but it gave me some respect for the road conditions.

I came off this afternoon, going fairly slowly round a familiar corner not far from home in wet conditions. I felt the front wheel start slipping, tried to right it and then whole bike seemed to just slip sideways from under me. After many years when I commuted in all weathers this is the first time a mere wet surface has tipped me off - ice yes but rain no. I walked around on the offending stretch and it felt slippy underfoot so I wondered if the rain had mingled with oil on the road. Guess I'll never know, though the black scuffing on my waterproof shell does smell slightly of rubber.
Anyway, apart from some grazes and rubbery stains no damage done. I guess once in 20+ years isn't too bad.
