Saw my first fixie yesterday afternoon, very surprised there are not more in Swindon as it is basically flat, as long as you avoid the area called old town or the area just south of Swindon(to get out into the countryside south of Swindon you have to negotiate 16% to 20% hills).

Not a good fixie example as it had no brakes at all and the rider decided on showing off by leg braking and sliding his back wheel.

It is strange to me not to see more around, in total I think I have seen three, Swindon is always at least a few years behind.
Come to think I have not seen a recumbent for over a year but I am seeing lots of folders.

Would love a go on a fixie- closest I've been is at a spin class down my gym. Occasionally forget myself and stop peddling only to have the pedals thunk me back into motion again.

No that's a good example of a "fixie" bike as ridden by idiotic hipsters. It however isn't a good example of a proper fixed gear bike as ridden by serious cyclists such as fossy & my self.

I might try a fixie next year if I get another C2W voucher, although not sure my better half would be too pleased with five bikes in the garage^_^ .

I've never seen one at all, or a recumbent, or a trike...

As you can imagine, seeing a normal two wheeled upright thing called a bicycle is quite hard in itself where I live.

I'd never heard of fixies before reading this forum. I don't think I've ever seen one and definately never ridden one so this is a genuine question rather than knocking - what on earth is the point of a bike without any gears? Is it a training / fitness thing? Sounds like too much hard work for me- but then I am a lazy bar steward!

I imagine it is harder work, alot harder than a geared bike because you cannot change when it gets a bit to hard.
