There are a few options to choose from including cassette and rear derailleur length (I went with a longer one as a precaution)

a single should do
what is better about a compact compared to a triple? lighter, easier to adjust FD?

Well done 'Cheers Ed'

A double has less rotating mass, and we all know that rotating mass is the best weight to lose.

On the other hand my triple has a 22 tooth granny (because I live in Yorkshire and am neither 15 nor fit as a fiddle)

fair enough, apart from both the local south and north downs we aren't too hilly here in kent and i am a keen climber so i don't mind a double or compact
not racing yet so i won't let triple/double/compact be my deciding factor over 2 bikes

The bike is mine.

If Ed does buy it I want him to know all the facts. I have had the bike since new Dec 2009 and done about 2000 miles/ year on it. mostly audaxing and long day rides.I have another bike for commuting plus a tourer .

Have been using it regullarilly until now. Its had a new bottom bracket and a few cassettes and chains. Front chain rings are original and still going ok.

Frame has a few chips and scratches , still looks good when clean. Outside of one shifter is scratched.
