I just popped into this shop today. To have a look around, and speak to the staff. You see this was my first job.June,July and August 1966.I was 3rd sales Mens shoes.I can still remember Mr John Wainwright,1st sales,a gentleman and a very gentle man.So today is closes, and the staff no longer have jobs.I wished them all the very best for 2014,1966 a lifetime ago.
I left because at just over 16 i was a Leeds United supporter and i had to work on a saturday till 17-30,not good.I also missed the World Cup Final.Memories eh.

did you buy owt in the closing down sale?

my first job was in 1985. Well i say 'job', a YTS at the local bus firm, trying and failing to become a diesel fitter. After deregulation, it was clear there was no job for me at the end of it. That firm is now long gone.

Back in 1966,it was a little like, Are you being served. We had one of those tube and cannister jobbies, where the sales tickets and money went zooming around the building.
they were ace! but as i kid i could never work out why we handed over the cash upstairs and were given the change & receipt downstairs.

in '85-87 at lancaster city transport, they employed a signwriter instead of just using stickers for 'first aid kit', 'fire extinguisher', 'emergency exit' (as well as all outside livery of course). Spelling wasn't his strong point as the odd bus had 'firts aid kit', 'emergeny exit', 'pull handel to open', 'fire extingisher' and the like... was nice that everything apart from the eventual 'no smoking' signs were all hand done.

I remember those, from when I started work in um....err... 1978. That was at J & J Cash, Coventry (the name tag manufacturer). I was in the Advertising Department. Does anyone else remember the proper name for them?

My first job was in 1978. Joined P&O (as close as I ever want to get to working in London , head office was in St. Botolph Street back then) as a Deck Cadet, and went to Khorromshahr, Iran, to go for a 6 month sail on this, the m.v. Stratheden:

Visited most ports in the Gulf, plus Karachi, Bombay, Singapore, Penang, Hong Kong, and a load of Japanese ports too. Two round trips Gulf/Japan before flying home. Liked it that much I did another 3 years on different ships, before that particular career was "sunk". Best job I ever had, and possibly the only one I look back on with any great fondness. It was all downhill after that!
