First off, the NHS and a Frac Neck Femur

Well it had to happen some time I've had my first off.

Some time on Monday evening, I have no memory of the accident, a ped walking in front of me while I was somewhere near whitehall. I have no memory of where or actually what time.

Suffice to say that i've just spent 5 days under the care of the NHS at Guys and Tommies and now have a plate and a bloody big bolt where before only bone existed. technically its a fractured neck of the femur, but what it really means is I'm off the leg for six weeks, the bike for a good deal longer, and my skiing and sailing plans are screwed for this year. No damage to the bike or any other part of me so I must have gone over the handlebars and hit the ground with my thigh.

The police where there immediately, as was an ambulance but i can't currently remember even leaving work that evening so what actually happened I've no idea, only what i've heard others say.

The real bummer though is my new cycletowork scheme Condor was due for delivery this weekend, so do I keep it, not take delivery or what. Staring at it for the next three months is'nt going to be much fun!

I don't post often, though I lurk on a nightly basis (except when I'm in hospital of course) so I hope people don't mind me posted this rather sad tail.

Oh, and one last thing. If anyone spots the bastard who stepped out in front my bike last Monday evening along whitehall get his or her name. I've a bone , or is that a broken bone, to pick with them.

First of all: ARSE

I'm sorry you and all your plans have been banjaxed.

Secondly: I'd keep the bike.

I've been forced off the bike for the last few months and only recently been able to ride again. It was the prospect of being able to use the new gear that I'd bought that kept me focused on what I was going to do rather than what I couldn't. I've spent quite a while planning my recovery and I even started to enjoy it; now that I'm riding again even the simplist achievments are exciting.

Ouch.

I'd say keep it, it'll encourage you to get riding again, and give you the tools to do it. physio would likely recommend it as a recovery strategy when all's healed and healthy again.

Keep it, just put it somewhere you can't see it. Like your folks place or a friends. I'd be happy to look after it for you.

Depending on whether it's a 58cm or not....;)

Get well soon geez.

Errrr.....
Ouch, unlucky! That sounds like it couldn't have gone much worse. ;)

It's amazing how we protect ourselves through these traumas, though. That's a nasty injury, and you wouldn't want to remember it!

No, we don't! I'm naturally a lurker myself, and by the time I read these kind of threads the virtual tea and sympathy has already been handed out. But I always think "there but for the grace of God", so have my sympathy, a virtual dram, and if you're still up in the small hours feeling sorry for yourself hopefully this will take your mind off things.

Bad luck iwf, not something you will get over quickly but the main thing is you will get over it and that beautiful Condor will be waiting to carry you around!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Commisserations! Keep the Condor, as others have said it will inspire you during your recovery.
Pedestrians are slowly becoming as dangerous as drivers down in Brighton, the commute is becoming a game of chicken with morons stepping off the pavement without looking, or looking and deciding 'it's only a bike', grrrrrr!

Oh, nasty!

Rest, heal & grow strong again. Take the time needed to do that.

Keep the bike. When you're well enough, you will have the sheer joy of getting on to a brand new bike - it'll be worth the wait.

Hope you mend quickly iwf, welcome to the world of people with metal somewhere in their body. I broke my ankle in 3 places after a silly piggy back accident.

Shame you didn't take the ped with you, people should learn that stepping out in front of a fast moving bike can hurt.

I think you should keep the bike, its something to get better quickly for.

Horrible

Get well soon.

I'd vote for keeping the bike too, it'll give you something to look forward to and aim for. Keeping it out of sight is a very good idea I think as well.

bummer fella, hard luck, 'only' a broken femur is still not bad though, it can always be worse

and scum of a ped that legs it when you;re clearly that badly hurt

purely out of interest re the memory, helmet?

re the condor, at least it's safe in the shop

I suppose they'd keep it for you but have you paid for it in full yet? I'd be tempted to ask them to put your order back, they have enough orders to allocate the frame to someone else I'd have thought, you'll have plenty of time to reorder from the sounds of it

which one did you go for anyway?

ah bollocks, you're the bloke that PMed me about condor aren't you, sympathies again

First night at home, god I'm sore.

Sliver lining. Using the walkie talkie I'd bought for the skiing I was able to order my morning coffee from mrs iwf remotely. I could have just shouted as she was only in the next room, but hey trying to stay positive. The marital bed being too hard for current use.

Thanks for all the support. With all my new found free time (no badminton, etc, etc) then I can post more.

I want to also track down the original police report. Perhaps it was a rich american who stepped out and maybe was stupid enough to leave his or her details. £££

But I still can't get over the memory loss. Can't remember getting the bike out of the pound, riding from Tooting into town or the accident itself. just lying in the road shivering thinking I must get up I've got to go skiing in a week's time. Oh I do remember telling the ambulance to make sure they brought my bike to the hospital.

Being a lurker, most of my purchases have been as a result of much reseasch from the site.

so yes, I was wearing the full bike gear. Gore Phantom, Helmet Gore Gloves dhb full length tights, clipless shoes. Flashing light up front, two behind.

Get this though, no damage to any gear. They even managed to get the tight off without cutting them off. No idea how they did that.

will keep the condor, for sure. it's a reward for getting better. I wonder could I set it up as a Trainer.....

Best wishes for a full recovery, iwf.

It reminds me how lucky I was to escape with a sore shoulder and bruised ribs when I steam-rollered a pedestrian at 20mph.

Def keep the Condor.
