So test ride with my shiny new wheels and brand new unmarked tyres, 20 mile in an innocuous right hand turn at about 2 mph and a gust of wind pushed me wider than I expected, the front wheel kissed the kerb and off I went. Gash and gravel rash to left knee, several tiny rips to bar tape and worst of all gravel rash to braking surfaces of both wheels.

Back home knee not too bad after washing off the blood and grime, worst of the sharp edges polished off the rims. Still feeling foolish.

So if I'm really struggling on my first forum ride on Saturday I have a ready made excuse.

In not a dissimilar fashion, a few years ago I set off to work wearing my nice brand new yellow cycling jacket. About 200 metres up the road, skited over on some unexpected ice; grubby road marks all down one side of said jacket - aarrgghh - !

Ouch ... Fortunately, you were not badly hurt, but damaging new wheels must have been annoying!

It sounds like you were riding a bit too close to the kerb.

I braked on wet leaves, came off, and ripped my new jacket, as well as battering myself!

The moral of the story is ....... Don't buy anything new for your bike, or to wear on your bike. Nobody ever falls off on an old bike with worthless parts, while wearing well used and unloved kit!
