I have just got my first pair of "proper" road shoes; a pair of Diadora Sprinter 2's for £28. What a difference they make. For one they are so very light and two the additional power transfer is amazing.

I bought a pair of cycling shoes from Aldi for only £20, but they're nowhere near the style of your diadoras. I haven't dared check whether they're made from old horses or not yet.
