I got hit by a car this evening, and I've asked myself the question could I have avoided it, and really the answer is no.
For anyone who knows Wembley Park, I'm on my way to Northwick Park Hospital, coming down Wembley Park Drive. Just past the station I need to turn right across a box junction into Brook Avenue. It's as busy as usual at 18:15, and as I approached the turn, I noticed a car waiting to exit Brook Ave. I'm always careful about road placement on right turns, so that I'm not obstructing anyone coming out, thus stopping well forward of the left hand lane's exit. I do remember being extra careful, having noticed the car.
I was waiting about a minute (usual for this time), when the car has come out, straight into my back end. This suggests to me he must have come out at quite a shallow angle, bearing in mind my placement and that it was almost a direct rear end hit.
I'm not sure how I came off, but finished face down on the road. I had hurt my back, but not so much that I couldn't get up.
I must confess at this point I reacted badly with a bit of bad language, as I really couldn't understand how he hadn't seen me - after all, we'd both been waiting for a minute.
Sorry to drag this out, I just need to record details while I still remember them.
We did exchange names and numbers, and he admitted fault, agreeing to pay for repairs.
Not having been in this situation before, I hope I've done all the right things so far.
Crikey - I bet it'll hurt more in the morning.
As for the bike, it's a shame it was the one day a week I commute a full 64m round trip, and thus it's the road bike that's copped it, rather than the indestructible MTB or the Brompton.
Visible damage is a destroyed rear wheel, bent rear mech and a distorted torn saddle. Only the bike shop will be able to tell me if anything more is amiss.
Are aluminium frames fairly robust in these situations?
Thank you for bearing with me.
