I got hit by a car this evening, and I've asked myself the question could I have avoided it, and really the answer is no.
For anyone who knows Wembley Park, I'm on my way to Northwick Park Hospital, coming down Wembley Park Drive. Just past the station I need to turn right across a box junction into Brook Avenue. It's as busy as usual at 18:15, and as I approached the turn, I noticed a car waiting to exit Brook Ave. I'm always careful about road placement on right turns, so that I'm not obstructing anyone coming out, thus stopping well forward of the left hand lane's exit. I do remember being extra careful, having noticed the car.
I was waiting about a minute (usual for this time), when the car has come out, straight into my back end. This suggests to me he must have come out at quite a shallow angle, bearing in mind my placement and that it was almost a direct rear end hit.
I'm not sure how I came off, but finished face down on the road. I had hurt my back, but not so much that I couldn't get up.
I must confess at this point I reacted badly with a bit of bad language, as I really couldn't understand how he hadn't seen me - after all, we'd both been waiting for a minute.
Sorry to drag this out, I just need to record details while I still remember them.
We did exchange names and numbers, and he admitted fault, agreeing to pay for repairs.
Not having been in this situation before, I hope I've done all the right things so far.

Crikey - I bet it'll hurt more in the morning.

As for the bike, it's a shame it was the one day a week I commute a full 64m round trip, and thus it's the road bike that's copped it, rather than the indestructible MTB or the Brompton.
Visible damage is a destroyed rear wheel, bent rear mech and a distorted torn saddle. Only the bike shop will be able to tell me if anything more is amiss.
Are aluminium frames fairly robust in these situations?
Thank you for bearing with me.

Only thing i would have done different is ring the police. Any form of collision with another vehicle needs to be recorded and it's much better if you can get a police officer down at the scene to check the driver out on insurance etc.. there and then!

Good luck getting everything sorted. and i hope your back isn't damaged!

Sorry to hear about this, Charlie.

I'm glad it wasn't worse, and hope you don't feel any worse in the morning!

can't really offer you any advice other than, if you've got full CTC membership, get in touch with their legal help line and let them deal with all the hassle of claiming for the damage.

Hey, this is not good. I really hope you don't wake up in the morning and find swelling and injuries are a lot worse than you thought a few hours ago. The CTC people are supposed to be pretty good aren't they.

Suppose you'll have to liven up more rides for other people and do more FNRttcs on a brompton.

Firstly, Charlie, sincere best wishes for a full return to fitness... bit of a shocker I suspect, which is being 'replayed' time and time again. As Gaz says, police, then the CTC. Doc as well perhaps, but I'm sure your body will be telling you that. It's a racetrack down there is it not? I would be tempted to get onto Forty Ave by turning left at the lights - still got to turn right out of Chalkhill I suppose, damn...

It's amazing what lengths folk will go to in order to rid the world of those weirdy-coloured bikes!

And, out of sympathy and unity I suppose, Charlie  I got doored by a big, big door this morning! A Range Rover yummy mummy in Eton Avenue executing the perfect 'corner of the door disabler'. And it's my left arm, and I have to get to a meeting. Ban everything, that's what I say! And no, I didn't 'let rip' in front of a school full of minors using 'language that only mummy uses when daddy has been out all night...'

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that, Teef.

Very creditable of you not to use colourful language - your self-control is far better than mine!

Ben everything, that's what I say. (Oh, you just said that)

I thought the police are only interested if someone is injured?

Sorry CharlieB to be tinkling a tiny, cautionary, glockenspiel of wariness (rather than the full on tolling of the bell of doom) but that sounds like the kind of impact that will crack an aluminium seat or chain stay. Although as the rear wheel absorbed a chunk of the energy the stays might have stood a better chance.

Just so I know - what is this 'Ben everything'? What does it involve? Does it require a supply of Bens? Are the Bens still functional after use?

Bad luck Charlie - hope the back is OK.

I don't like waiting in box junctions in busy traffic as I feel very exposed, particularly when you have to wait for a long time for a gap to appear in rush hour traffic.

That had occurred to me, but I haven't looked too closely yet.
What does toll the bell of doom for me is that my ignorant guess is that a lot of non-cyclists may not realise how much bikes cost. If Evans on Friday declare it a write off for the reasons above, the motorist may think twice about settling up when presented with a bill for a grand.
Will that inevitably mean doing things the hard way, i.e. via insurers?
In which case, no witnesses (to my ken), may make things tricky. I am kicking myself that I didn't photograph the final position of his vehicle, because it's very informative.

It's ok, we'll exclude certain Bens for the pruposes of thsi dsicusison.
