Nice one Accy. Its good to see you back in the saddle again buddy. Just take it nice and easy for now and don't overdo things. I'm sure by summer you,ll be back into the swing of things again :-)

Well yes. They say there's only you who knows your own body. If it hurts i'll slow down or stop. Otherwise i'll carry on. It's been nearly 3 months since the last op',so i don't think i've got back on the bike too soon.
Maybe not completely given your post about not being able to lean forwards. It's not only about pain . Sure you'll figure it out. All the best

They didn't offer physio or recommend it. Not blowing my own trumpet here but i think they can tell the ones who'll be into self help and those who need a bit of motivation.

Physio only works if you do the exercises at home. If they were using motivation to decide who gets physio it would make more sense to only give to motivated self starters and not waste it on those who won't do enough work to benefit.

You should really push for at least one appointment with a physio, who can give you specific exercises.

You would be as well to meet with a physio, either NHS or private. After my break, the physios, both NHS and private gave me several specific exercises to strengthen some of the smaller stabiliser muscles. If these are not strengthened properly you might find certain activities become difficult, as larger muscles mask the problem. For example standing on one leg to put on a shoe.

Great news Accy, but you should also visit a physio as suggested above.
Don't be stubborn

Oh yeah, didn't say "good going accy"

That's a pretty impressive speed, too.

(on the physio - I've said this before, but I asked for an appointment when they were about to discharge me without one, and I was seeing a physio a week later, no problem. You're obviously under a different NHS trust, but it's certainly worth trying)

It wasn't as bad(leaning forward) as it was when i had my first break. I went out a few times and i had to sit more or less upright. I've just had a thought. Maybe i was sat upright because i was wearing my glasses. I usually wear contacts when out riding, but seeing as i haven't worn them in 3 months and i wasn't planning on going more than about 5 miles i wore my glasses instead. When i wear glasses i can't see ahead unless i keep my head up. Maybe i just rode upright for better vision and i didn't realise it?

I now ride a recumbent trike because I dread falling off a standard bike. Yesterday I was calling at a customer's house when I tripped on a raised kerb and went down face first. Twenty or more years ago I'd have bounced back up and forgotten about it in five minutes, but age related deterioration meant a big bloody patch on my knee through thinning skin and a bruise the size of a planet, plus cuts on both hands. The knee is still aching today even with a big plaster and a support on it.

I look back in sadness at the time I spectacularly binned it in a road race and just got back on and finished, proud of the blood trickling from my knee and elbow because it made me look well 'ard. Now I'd be down and waiting for an ambulance. Old age is a cruel trick.
I remember when i first got SPD pedals in the late 90's. I came to a standstill then went over on my right side when i couldn't get my shoe off the pedal. I just got back up after much embarrassment and rode off, not even nursing a bruise. That right side's the one that broke twice from 2 similar falls. Mind you,i'm not putting it down to age alone. I was 3 stone heavier then and had more padding. I've bought myself some hip protector shorts to wear under my cycling shorts. Will they work? Let's hope so if i come off again!!!
