I picked up my new bike last Monday. I was told by the LBS that I could take it back after a month or so to have have necessary checks/adjustments. My question is, how much mileage are they basing this on?

I've done 200 miles on it and the brakes really need adjusted. The front is shuddery and the back lacks power completely. Not good!!

Do I take it in for the free service or is it too early and more beneficial to leave the bike to bed in some more?

From my past experience the service can be redeemed when ever. My last local bike shop said that if I have any problem just to come back and they will adjust anything as it's the natural stretching of the bike aka things like the chain. This did not effect my first service. After putting about 100miles in I took up there offer

The chief concern seems to be adjusting cables so it's more a matter of time to let them stretch and settle in before doing a readjustment rather than any given mileage. But if the brakes aren't set up smoothly, tell them as soon as it's convenient for you to drop the bike in. It sounds a bit like the front brakes aren't toed in properly but it might be worthwhile giving the rims a good clean anyway, just to see whether it makes a difference. I don't know what's going on with the back: it's usually far too easy to lock the rear rather than being unable to get any purchase on the wheel.

If you've got a good LBS I would image they'll not mind you stopping by for a cable adjustment. Having said that, if it's just brakes that need attention I'd hop on Youtube and sort them yourself - you'll need to perform regular maintenance of this sort anyway so you may as well start now.

The first service is usually cable adjust and a general check that everything has settled in as it should.
