Did a 100k today and noticed a red mark on my knees. Thought it was just due to my exertions on the bike. Stripped off when I got home and discovered the classic cyclist's tan.

Anyone got recommendations for sun tan lotion? Not too bothered about the lower extremities, but need to find a decent product for my face. Preferably one that doesn't mix with sweat and sting the eyes.

cheers

Wow sunburn in March .. and in Glasgow!!! The only person I know that does that is my friend's red-headed, very very pale skinned son. I have noticed that my freckles are making an appearance ... I normally start burning near the end of April ...

As for sunscreen - very personal thing ... I don't like anything greasy ... and so I can't go for the really high protection stuff, and instead have to keep reapplying the stuff. If I use the really high SPF stuff I put off applying it. And I've yet to find one that doesn't make my eyes water!!! Even my face cream which claims to have a SPF value. I use a Nivea one SPF 15 or 20 (the 15 is lighter, more easily absorbed), and go through a couple of bottles every year on just myself... let alone the kids! However none of them have freckles - so they don't burn as easily.

I don't know all the in's and out's of sunscreen but I think I read that last year's cream isn't as effective ... but I just use it at the beginning of the year.

London was very warm and sunny today.

As my hairline is not quite where it used to be, I got a touch of sunburn on the top of my bonce and my face. MrsP thought it quite funny that I could get burnt at the first showing of the sun. When on holiday or out on rides I do normally need factor 50 as I burn easily, as yesterday showed.

Piz Buin "Day Long" SPF30. Said to last 6 hours - they have short days in France!!
Their aftersun is good, takes any slight burn away and you end up with a tan as well.
Sunbeds I wouldn't touch, knowing the damage that your skin can get which comes home to roost as you get older.

I picked up some rather good sunburn on Thursday riding through Kirkcudbright. I've also been topping it up for the last two days.

It is March isn't it? :sun:

I got a tan cycling in Birmingham, in January!

The light gets reflected of the road, greatly magnifying its intenstity.

I got burnt too, on my head because I'm a baldy.

This is almost like those letters to the Times regarding hearing the first Cuckoo of spring. Sadly I didn't hear a cuckoo and wonder if (quite seriously) anyone else did?

That question posed: perhaps a new and more reliable indicator might be used? I did spot the first tattood chav walking about with his top off....

I have noticed that my freckles are making an appearance ...

I've got year round freckles, although I suspect the sunburn was caused by the length of time I as in the sun rather than the strength of it

I used Reimann P20 last year on the few occasions that the sun shone! Worked well and is water resistant.

That looks interesting. Will give that a try.

thanks

Mine are the all year round sort but they fade significantly in the winter ... then one day the sun is suddenly strong enough to make them stand out. I remember trying lemon juice on them to see if I could get them to disappear as a child.
