Fish and Chip/Chinese Takeaway fusion...

Since living in Liverpool, attending University, I've noticed a trend for takeaway shops to offer both traditional Fish and Chips, as well as Chinese. I've never seen it anywhere else. Is it just a Liverpool thing? Or is it similar where you live?

It really annoys me, as it just results in neither being particularly good, I see no need for it!?

Only thought of this as a result of the Ketchup thread...

Many many years ago as a very youngman .Our chippie owned by one Fred Sleep,great fish and chips by the way .


Sold out to a Chinese takeaway.They offered both foods .And like you suggest Fish and chips were crap .Also at that time 'foreign' muck was not as appreciated as it is now .So they closed down .

Fairly common, you normally get kebabs as well and sometimes pizza.

Pangs in Kentish Town is the 'Chinese takeaway chippy' where one can get freshly made 'samosas' - deep-fried, vegetable filled, spicy triangles of pleasure - with a large portion of chips. Now that is fusion! And invariably delicious. Apparently.
(Just on the right after Prince of Wales Road - Camden direction - if anyone should wish to sample..)

Yeh I don't mind those, there's a clay oven kebab place nearby which is amazing. They offer kebabs, pizzas, burgers etc. But when a place is offering Fish and chips, they are generally piss poor if said shop offers chinese food as well.

It's not that recent a development, as the Chinese opposite the Dun Cow on the A4 in Reading did F&C back in 1981 when I was at uni there.

The landlady of the Dun Cow had no sense of humour... as I found out when I asked her who it was that Dun her.

Back in the early 70's when my Dad had a take away he used to annoy the fish and chip shop across the road.
Their customers would buy fish and then come across to ours to buy the chips because our Chinese cooked chips were better.

I guess some takeaways have just taken over cooking the fish better too!

That's generally been my experience - and the opposite to some people earlier. Chinese take-aways tend to have the oil hotter, they change it more often, and their chips tend to be lighter and crispier as a result.

Possibly it was a fish and chip shop that expanded to Chinese food?

I must admit that some of then are dire.

I seem to remember that when I was a student in Sheffield the only place you could get fish and chips on a Sunday was from the Chinese - some sort of Bylaw outlawing Fish and Ship shops opening on a Sunday?

Love the gravy and curry sauce you get in Chinese chippies up North. For those of you south of Birmingham yes we have a habit of chucking gravy or curry sauce all over our chips. None of this jellied eals or pie and liquor nonsence.

I found the same when I moved up from London to Liverpool here in the 90s.

1. Chips and Gravy ... yuk ... however No4 son who was born here is astonished at the looks he gets when he asks for gravy on his chps now he's at uni in Stafford
1. The huge amount of salt that's automatically sprinkled
3. The enormous portions
4. The lack of pickled onions or "whally's"
5. There was a branch of Harry Ramsdens near Queens Dock, that was excellent but I've not been there for afew years now... try that maybe..
6. Fish becomes unidentifiable.... ask for cod and you get "fish", ask for plaice and you get "fish" etc. Its become catchphrase in our house " "you wa.. fi.."

Oh, and you cant get the chinese dish without chips or rice or half and half. I persisted once and was told that I could have it on its own but I'd have to pay for the chips/rice ...
