On another site there is a discussion about the rising cost of fish and chips; since I was planning to eat fish and chips as my main meal of the day on my upcoming LeJog (off a food truck or a chippy if possible), the costs quoted are absurd, so what is the alternative, bangers and mash, or what ...?

What do people find to eat reasonably in towns and villages when cycling and on a budget these days?

Seems to vary depending on where you go. I thought the going rate was about £15 for a fish supper but I was speaking to someone yesterday who had been in Callander recently and it was still just £10 there.

I always find with fish and chips that the anticipation is far better than the reality, however good it is, it’s always slightly disappointing and just feels massively unhealthy.

I am not suggesting it is anywhere a healthy meal, but for cycling some distance each day, it would be a good meal for protein and carbs I would have thought. But I do agree, there is a pub near us that does fish in beer batter - it must be an American thing -, and I've only had it once and it was sickly and ughish (new word which you are welcome to use).
However, if a chippy in a van or high street shop is open, then if reasonably priced, fish and chips would be acceptable. I could always vomit it up after the basic nutrients had made their way into my system.
Other than F&C's, what about sausages, are they readily available off a van? Maybe sausages in a bun?

Does anyone have an idea how the price of fish and chips has ridden over the recent years? Is this a trend? It just seems that the prices quoted are way above what I would have had to spend even 3 years ago in Cornwall.

Slightly different of teh topic

but over the last week or so I have found that 2 F&C shops that used to do Gluten Free no longer do

to complicated to have a separate fryer I assume

but it damn annoying!!!

Will you be riding with anyone? I find a portion of fish and chips is usually enough for two.

One of the long distance guys I used to know used to keep those small ring pull cans of tuna in his kit bag. At the end of a long training run he'd pop the lid and fork the tuna into his mouth. I suppose it's healthier to combine something like that with a portion of chips.

Is there still a difference between asking for "fish and chips" or "cod and chips"?

I read a long time ago if you ask for fish and chips, then they could theoretically give you the cheapest fish so you have to specifically ask for cod, or haddock or whatever you want.
