Put some Schawlbe Marathon's on last night , just having a trek through Richmond Park , a big difference from the ones Surley supplied , they handled rough stuff ok but what a bumpy road ride , although used to off road tyres ,they didn't fit the bill on this Cross Check for me , rides really well on these Marathons and so smoothly at. £17 odd a pop well worth it !

I got a pair of 26 x 1.5 Marathon for Christmas and I took the first test on boxing day, I agree about the bumpy ride but I can't complain. I had a ride on gravel today and they were OK too.. I might try a lower PSI

I have a pair of 38c marathon plus tyres on my hybrid (former commuter bike) and they handled rough towpaths pretty well. my hybrid was so much more comfortable to ride even with the same charge spoon saddle thats now been transferred over to my road bike.

That's probably down to the 38mm tyres (the c is for wheel size, 700c) versus 25mm (or 23mm) on your roadbike. Run a slightly lower psi in the road tyres (depending on your weight as you don't want pinch punctures)

It sounds like you need to adjust your position on the bike. Numbness, neck, back, knee and even elbow pain, are all signs that bike fitting needs a little work.

Wider tyres or less psi gives a more softer / comfortable ride. You are limited on how wide your tyres are, mostly by the forks on road bikes.

I use latex tubes with non winter tyres and I can run the tyres with slightly less pressure, 85psi where I would normally use 110psi.

These schwalbe 's can run between 65-85 , my pump could only manage 70 , so went with it , had a bit of wheelspin on a concrete off ramp as I came off the the Thames at Richmond Bridge , other than than that , xlnt , handled fairly deep mud , and a very rough descent , a cobbled road ok , and cut down on the amount of mud I usually have to clean off , I'll put 85 in them at a bike shop and see how they go ,

Im not getting any back pain or numbness etc. Im just saying that 38c marathon pluses absorbed a lot of bumps that i recieved as part of my commute and weekend rides. Also my hybrid feels a little better as my ride position is more relaxed. With the new bike and 25mm tyres a lot of small bumps are transfered through the bike though this has been mentioned before in reviews

Yes, your 38c would absorb a lot of the bumps.... these tyres can be run with less pressure and that also helps.

The good news is that you do get used to the harsher ride you get from a road bike. I love the ride on my MTB with fat tyres and so on but as soon as I get a chance I ride my road bike. I probably do 95% of my riding on a road bike
