Dear All,

Tried a trackstand this morning and sheared off a spoke. Are spoke breakages on a fixed more likely or have I just been unlucky?

I have only ever once broken a spoke before on a normal bike and I think that had had a bit of help from someone's boot. That's about 40 years of solid riding.

Unlucky.

Handbuilt's on mine, but using 3x cross lacing with ACI single plain gauge spokes - not even tweaked a single spoke on them since purchase in May09.

Fixed wheel acts on a wheel like a disc brake does. The hub de-acceleration does put more stress on the spokes. Theres no reason for the spokes to fail any more frequently though. You just need to have the wheels built to cope with it. (ie not radially laced)
