Not motoring but I am amazed at what some people seem to manage intuitively.
We had a worm drive with a reduction gearbox which was giving trouble. The workshop guy we had then was a motor mechanic originally and had a drink problem as well.
There were no drawings but he dismantled the whole gearbox and laid all the parts out before cleaning and reassembling. Add oil and it worked perfectly. The whole thing looked very complex to my eye and I was extremely nervous as getting a replacement would not be quick or easy.

When I was 14 I was given a Ford Anglia engine and gearbox in a frame that actually worked and I use to take it apart, I had a workshop manual and a shed load of tools, the gearbox was the hardest, but after a couple of times it became second nature.
