Flash drive help needed...

My problem is a little long winded but bear with me....

My car (argghhhh I said the c word) stereo will play music on a flash drive.... I have a 2gb and 4gb ones which will play from where you switched off the ignition when you switch on again but both are quite bulky and I scrounged a physically smaller 16gb Kingston one from father in law but this will not stay on the track you switch off.

I emailed Kingston and they said "Sorry but our drives are not designed for storing music on or playing on car stereos so we don't know"

After googling Kingston music problems I thought I had it sussed when it was suggested it was an encryption problem and a FULL format (instead of quick format) would sort it AND it did for a day....

On the Dacia forum someone said get a Sandisk 16 gb as this works correctly and provided a link to Amazon but just as I was going to order one.... someone else joined it and said it didn't on theirs (We all have the same factory fitted stereo)

So my question (finally) is does anyone know what I can do to Kingston drive (formatting differently etc) to make it start from the same place (like my smaller capacity ones do) as its a pain trawling through a 100 odd albums to get back to where I was ......

Buy a kingston traveller 101 and give that a go. We have to upgrade firmware on some servers, the only ones that work are the travellers. Can't explain why??????

What format are you using? NTFS or fat32? NTFS can give you a few issues with loaded permissions etc (although this "shouldn't" be a problem on a sound system, but I have heard stories).

Kingston do have a utility you could try if its compatible with your model number:

I have had similar issues with SD cards and my Audi.

It's Fat32 (I reformatted the 2gb to ntfs to try it and stereo wouldn't read it) I did have a look on Kingston website and saw that download, from the spiel it didn't seem to help my problem, but might have a go with it anyway. thanks

It wasn't that download as its not the hyper drive type but will see if they have something similiar

Thanks I might go for one of them... even if it doesn't work like I want it to... its still nice and neat but hopefully if I stay away from Kingston it should work like the 2 other ones I've got.

I have no explanation for this, but I find flash drives over 8gb are very fussy about tag info on tracks, I could not get a 16GB to play (Ford Audio) until I edited all the tag info.

Might be the music some players don`t like variable bit rate files if it was OK you might just have got to something it cant play so lost its position.

Have you checked that you car audio can handle a 16gb dsc? Sometimes it's limited giving you te errors you see. My Audi only handles 2gb properly. I use an iPod adaptor though which works well.

Hadn't thought of that... but other people on Dacia forum seem to be using different brands of 16 gb ok but it seems a bit hit miss... 1 person is using a 16gb sandisk ok but someone else is having problems. I've got a gen 2 ipod touch might try that but it hasn't got a lot of music on it
